1208 Operations Support SME Job Description

SME shall support the Section 1208 Program. In addition, this SME supports collaboration events for 1208 authority by leveraging USSOCOM automated systems to support the initiation, preparation and execution of meetings, working groups, and conferences at USSOCOM Headquarters and elsewhere. Tasks include:
  • Provide subject matter expertise to the Section 1208 Lead Program Manager regarding 1208 authority areas of interest.
  • Prepare and complete staff actions pertaining to 1208 authorities within HQ, USSOCOM.
  • Provide support to information management for the 1208 program via the USSOCOM portal.
  • Draft and present briefings referencing all duties and responsibilities regarding the 1208 program.
  • Plan, organize and execute periodic operational and administrative workshops to inform and train 1208 project managers
  • Prepare and staff executive reports through USSOCOM HQ to the Office of Secretary of Defense
Minimum Education/Experience Requirement: Master's degree in relevant field (e.g., Management, Administration, Program Management, Operations Research, Economics, or Social Sciences) and fifteen (15) years combined Joint, SOF, Interagency, and Regional experience working military operations to include special operations conducted in a joint, combined, and interagency environment.

Required skills include:
  • 5 years' experience working Section 1208 Authorities
  • 10 years' experience in the Military Decision Making Process, deliberate and crisis planning, and the Joint Operational Plans and Execution System procedures.
  • 5 years' experience leading integrated process teams, joint planning groups, or battle staffs at the operational and strategic levels.
  • 5 years' experience working Concepts of Operation and Expense Authorization Documents
  • Completed, one Joint Staff, combatant command, or multi-national staff tour Graduated from a Joint Professional Military Education course, Intermediate Development Course or a Senior Professional Military Education Course
  • 10 years' experience using communication skills, both written and oral, to include preparation of written products for senior leader (general officer/flag officer/senior executive service level) use and the ability to communicate at all levels
  • 5 years' experience working with USSOCOM, subordinate organizations, DOD, and knowledge of each military U.S. military service's roles and missions

Must be willing to travel to various CONUS and OCONUS non-hazardous locations.

Current DoD Top Secret clearance and eligible for SCI access required.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Work will be performed inside a large facility. Work assignments vary based on client requirements. Position could require some night and weekend work. Travel is required to various CONUS and OCONUS non-hazardous locations based on client requirements.

Physical Requirements

Sitting at desk. Phone use and PC or laptop. Filing required. May require lifting and carrying boxes of supplies or files up to 25 lbs. Extended periods of sitting while on PC/laptop or phone.

Equipment and Machines

General office equipment, which includes: telephone, fax machine, copier, PC/laptop, and other miscellaneous office equipment.


Work assignments dependent on requirements by the client. It is important to be able to work at least 8 hours a day for 5 days per week (Monday through Friday).

Candidate must exhibit a professional behavior that promotes teamwork, fosters cooperation, and enhances productivity in the workplace. Must be well organized with the ability to coordinate, prioritize and execute multiple tasks simultaneously in a high-pressure environment. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to work effectively with a variety of government, military and contractor personnel at all levels. Must be able to interface effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Grooming and dress usually business casual, but dependent on client's standards. Must not pose a safety hazard to employees working in the same general area.
