The Principal Resident Technical Advisor with ALSTOM Power Canada Inc. within GE Power works at an expert level advising customer personnel and internal GE Power staff on best practices related to equipment operation and report the condition assessment of customer equipment through visual inspection, performance measurements or other testing.

Essential Responsibilities

Field Service

1. Focus on supporting customer in providing technical assistance/support to plant and staff in the operation & maintenance of steam turbine-generator assets and document all technical support activities.

2. Write detailed service reports covering observations, comments & recommendations.

3. Take part in GE and customer design reviews and provide input on constructability, operability, maintainability and safety considerations for a large refurbishment project.

4. Inspect equipment in both sanitary and unsanitary conditions and make recommendations for repairs.

5. Use test equipment to evaluate equipment performance and diagnose problems.

6. Develop/revise inspection & repair specifications for turbine & generator components.

7. Provide technical assistance for developing/revising operational and maintenance procedures.

8. Provide technical assistance for developing/revising predictive & preventative maintenance programs.

9. Provide technical and experience based recommendations and guidance to support customer business decisions for BBC/Alstom equipment.

10. Assist customer site with both long term and emergent technical issues.

11. Assist with Long Term Asset Management (LTAM) strategy and project development.

12. Participate on root cause teams (FMEAs & RCAs).

13. Provide emergency response to emergent issues as a technical resource for troubleshooting operational issues, inspecting components & assisting with development of repair plans, providing technical direction to plant staff, performing vendor oversight/QC functions.

14. Serve as a technical resource for the customer outage team during planned and unplanned unit outages.

15. Supervision of GE technical field service staff during maintenance and refurbishment outages.

16. Develop outage work scopes, schedules, contingency plans, execution plans, etc. in conjunction with customer third-party delegates.

17. Participate in routine customer meetings such as pre-outage planning, engineering staff meetings, project specific meetings, etc.


1. Review, interpret and comment on technical specifications.

2. Prepare estimates for onsite technical services, commissioning or training costs.

3. Coordinate commissioning activities on site.

4. Manage commissioning and overall schedule.

5. Integrate into customer's and GE's commissioning teams.

Business Development Support

1. Advise Product and Regional Managers of all business opportunities & competitor activities.

2. Provide technical support to other GE processes and/or Business Units.

Product Knowledge & Development

1. Advise Engineering and Product Managers (or appropriate Business Area) of any technical issue relating to performance with GE's equipment in the field.

2. Maintain and grow technical knowledge through training and reading.

3. Remain aware of market trends and customer business.


1. Support the Customer Complaint Resolution Process (CCRP) and report all customer expressions of dissatisfaction in the CCRP database or NCR database as appropriate.

2. Comply with various governing codes, ASME, ANSI, ASTM, NFPA, EPA, IEEE, NEMA, NBCC, NFCC, OHSA, CSA, CGSB, etc.

3. Comply with all ISO 9001 and EH&S procedures and work instructions and GE policies, guidelines and business objectives.


1. Comply with all company Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) procedures and work instructions, local provincial and site specific safety regulations, policies, and guidelines.

2. Ability to analyze differences between GE/customer/third-party EHS requirements and apply the most stringent requirements.


Skills Requirement:

- Engineering Technologist qualification or equivalent product experience.

- Previous job-related experience in the power generation industry: Over 15 years.

- Expert in the Brown, Boveri and Company (BBC) and Alstom Turbine Generator product line or equivalent.

- Ability to act in a supervisory role with a minimum of 15 years of experience.

- The individual must be dynamic, highly motivated, and enjoy challenges.

- The individual must be able to act independently to assess problems and make responsible

- The person should be extremely customer focused.

- Ability to pass GE and customer security clearance requirements.

- Must be competent with computers and normal applications (email, spreadsheets, word processing, Primavera P6, internal GE computer applications, customer computer applications, SAP, CAD).

- The position will require continuous learning and refreshment of skills.

- Language requirements: Must be able to write, speak and read English.

- Ability to travel internationally and regularly to the Oakville, Ontario office.

Desired Characteristics

- Electrical and/or controls knowledge would also be an asset.

Compensation Package:

This full-time (40 hours per week) permanent role is based at our Customer Site at 1 Holt Road South, Bowmanville, ON L1C 3Z8 with regular travel to the Oakville, ON office.

Annual salary between $95,000 and $103,000 CAD paid biweekly with future salary increases and timing based on merit.

Defined Contribution Pension Plan (effective on the first anniversary of employment start date). There are two parts to the pension plan. GE will make contributions on your behalf. In addition, there is a mandatory 4% employee contribution that receives a 50% match from GE. The plan will be set-up and 4% of your earnings will be deducted from your pay when you join the plan.

When you retire from GE, you will be eligible to purchase post-retirement benefits without proof of insurability.

Stock Purchase Plan

GE provides an opportunity to share in the ownership of the company with a 50% match to your contributions towards the purchase of GE stock. At your maximum participation, GE pays 3% of your salary into the plan.

Vacations and Paid Holidays

3 weeks of vacation entitlement annually.
