Department Overview

This position is located within Gas System Planning (GSP). GSP is responsible for providing hydraulic analysis, operational support, and system engineering of PG&E's backbone, transmission, and distribution systems.

• GSP's plans drive PG&E's gas system investments, design, and operations to deliver gas to PG&E's customers without operational incidents.
• GSP is recognized for its expert knowledge of PG&E's gas system operations and hydraulics and is seen as a leader in the use of powerful, innovative, and efficient analytical tools and processes to enable system planning.
• GSP promotes and employs decision-making that is logical, rigorous, takes into account diverse perspectives, and is recognized for use of operational best practices.

Position Summary

This position is represented by Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining.
Systems Engineering (50% of Time)
• Provide expert hydraulic analysis and distribution system engineering of PG&E's distribution systems. • Determine cost effective facility enhancements and replacements to meet customer needs and operating requirements.
• Provide expert consulting services to Gas Operations departments regarding operations of local distribution systems.
• Give formal and informal presentation to PG&E employees and external customers from a variety of backgrounds.

Operational Support (30% of Time):
• Provide support to Gas Operations personnel for emergencies, clearances, and winter planning.
• Assess impact of operations on the distribution system.
• Help identify best course of action to reduce or eliminate service interruptions.

Other Duties as Assigned (20% of Time):
• Assists as requested the Supervising Gas Engineer with other work related to system planning and operations.


• A Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering (mechanical or civil)
• Must live within one hour of local headquarters for emergency response requirements
PG&E Gas System Hydraulic Knowledge
Professional Engineer License
Pipeline Simulation Engineering Experience (SynerGEE or equivalent)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office


• Reviews shutdown plans to ensure gas capacity.
• Establishes regulator station design criteria, inlet and outlet pressures and flow rates.
• Assists in investigating customer pressure complaints.
• Prepares annual and 5 year capacity planning recommendations within assigned area.
• Prepares EASOP (economic analysis) for assigned projects.
• Prepares and reviews request for calculations (RFC) for new large customer load additions and approves elevated pressure requests within delegated authority.
• Recommends distribution main and service line sizing for new business, reconstruction, WRO, and pipeline replacement (GPRP) jobs.
• Reviews requirements for large meter sets i.e. piping size, equipment as requested for unusual situations.
• Submits various capital and expense items for the annual and 5 year budgets to the senior engineer.
• Uses gas planning workstation and associated software to prepare distribution system models which include digitizing, loading, validating, analyzing results, preparing, recommendations, preparing documentation, future growth planning.
• Uses planning workstation to provide recommendations for distribution system operation to ensure adequate pressure and capacity for normal seasonal operations and during emergency operations.
• Develops, recommends and communicates winter operating plan for facilities.
• Prepares relief valve and low pressure flow analysis calculations, BTU analysis.
• Provides technical support to other departments Winter chart planning and monitoring.
