The CHEMET Lab Analyst is responsible for carrying out testing and analytical functions including reagent preparation, sample analyses, instrument calibration and troubleshooting, result calculations, data management, and operation of instrumentation. These activities are performed within a laboratory that operates in support of a nuclear fuel production facility. This position involves the analysis of uranium and other materials used in fuel production.

Essential Responsibilities

As the CHEMET Lab Analyst , you will:
  • Be responsible for routinely performing analyses in any or all of the specific areas identified below:
  • Mass Spectrometric Analyses : Determine the isotopic contents of nuclear materials, and the major, minor and/or trace elements in various materials and samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS)
  • Wet Chemistry Analyses : Determine the chemical composition and impurities in nuclear materials and other samples using Wet Chemistry methods (titrimetric, gravimetric, colorimetric, chromatographic, etc.)
  • Spectrometric Analyses : Determine the concentrations of major, minor and/or trace elements in nuclear materials, process control samples, and environmental samples using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICPOES)
  • Environmental Analyses : Perform a variety of analyses to assure compliance with regulatory standards regarding employee safety and environmental protection
  • Metallography / Ceramography : Perform precision grinding, polishing, etching and staining techniques to produce test sample surface finishes representative of the true microstructures of materials and evaluate these sample surfaces using microscopy and digital image analysis
  • Corrosion Testing : Perform aqueous and super-heated steam corrosion evaluations on metallic parts
  • Be able to perform routine laboratory duties within radioactive material controlled areas and be able to pass a Nuclear Safety Training Test
  • Be able to work with acids, bases, solvents, radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials using appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Be able to use precision laboratory techniques such as pipetting, titrating, analytical weighings, making quantitative transfers, and preparing volumetric dilutions
  • Be able to operate the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and the instrument control computers that are routinely used for collection, analysis, storage, and retrieval of data
  • Be able to monitor lab equipment performance and respond to out-of-control / alarm conditions, carry out preventative maintenance activities, recognize equipment malfunctions, and accomplish simple repairs or corrections on a continuing basis
  • Be able to read, interpret, and understand complex instruction manuals, engineering drawings and schematics, and interactive software programs
  • Be able to perform mathematical unit conversions and perform laboratory operations that involve the use of both metric and English measurement systems
  • Participate in the maintenance of a current spare parts and supplies inventory. This activity includes routine checking of stock levels, placing material requests, making on-site trips to get supplies, and recommending changes in stock levels or items
  • Be able to prepare reagents and working standards using appropriate laboratory techniques and knowledge of proper reference material storage requirements
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills as frequent interaction with customers is an essential part of the job
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of Industrial Safety and Nuclear Safety guidelines and safe practices


  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Physical Science from an accredited college or university (OR a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of work experience in a commercial and/or military laboratory environment (experience must include hands on laboratory bench work, analytical instrumentation troubleshooting responsibilities and evidence of ability to properly interpret and use instrument manuels, equipment drawing and diagnostic procedures))
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a commercial and/or military laboratory environment (experience must include hands on laboratory bench work, analytical instrumentation troubleshooting responsibilities and evidence of ability to properly interpret and use instrument manuals, equipment drawings, and diagnostic procedures)
  • Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated experience with strong knowledge in at least one (1) of the following specific areas:
    • Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry
    • Ion chromatography
    • Liquid or gas chromatography
    • Metallography and/or ceramography
  • Ability and willingness to work a variety of shift arrangements with appropriate overtime as needed to provide continuous lab coverage
  • Ability and willingness to intermittently lift and carry up to 45 lbs. individually
  • Ability and willingness to pass the applicable quality control vision (Ishihara) test requirements

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Desired Characteristics

  • Demonstrated experience with strong knowledge of standard analytical laboratory methodology (titrimetry, gravimetry, spectrophotometry, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical information both verbally and in writing to other employees
  • Experience in the nuclear industry and/or working with uranium
  • Experience in using a computer based Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Experience in electronic data transfer and/or digital image analysis
  • Experience in production support laboratories
