The Product Safety Engineer is responsible for evaluating design related failure modes and ensuring potential hazards are mitigated to safe levels. The Product Safety Engineer's involvement is throughout the product life cycle; including conducting reviews as part of the design process and tracking resolution of field issues.

Essential Responsibilities

The Product Safety Engineer not only leads safety risk assessments for new and existing designs, but also leads resolution of product safety issues involving installed base equipment. The Product Safety Engineer will be involved in Due Diligence risk reviews (Potential acquisitions) and integration of the product safety process into newly acquired businesses. This role may support engineering teams in multiple regions including Europe, India, and China.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide thorough documentation of risk analysis (causes, controls, consequences, scoring, etc.), assumptions, team meetings, and program status in the SAFER database
  • Leading Product Safety risk assessments for GE Onshore Wind product lines, for both new product orders and installed base field modifications.
  • Research safety related information on equipment and processes.
  • Drive resolution of field issues: Lead investigation of field safety incidents; assist root cause analysis by working with cross-functional teams representing Product Service, Design Engineering, EHS, Legal, and the Chief Engineer's Office.
    Quantify risk: Perform quantitative risk modeling on complex systems to assess design safety risk. Lead the design team to identify and assess risk mitigation measures that assure a tolerable risk level is achieved.
  • Identify hazard mitigation of new/existing designs: Lead proactive product safety reviews in support of both new product introduction designs and existing product fulfillment activities. Perform risk assessments of safety critical systems and components. Ensure all aspects of product safety are addressed within the constraints of operational effectiveness, time and cost throughout the product life cycle.
  • Participate in Due Diligence reviews of potential acquisitions: Work with cross-functional teams (EHS, Engineering, Legal, etc.). The review will identify potential EHS and Product Safety risks, document details of each risk, and provide an executive summary to Business Development.


    • Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Safety, Environmental, or Industrial Engineering
    • Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and system
    • PC proficiency (Microsoft Outlook to schedule meetings, WebEx to conduct online meetings, typing / data entry)
    • Diligent record keeping, acute attention to detail (proof-reading, creation / maintenance of permanent safety records)
    • Organizational and documentation skills (keep track of multiple issue statuses and remaining actions to drive to closure)
    • Fluent English language skills

    Desired Characteristics

    • Knowledge of Renewables organization and equipment designs
    • Experience in performing engineering hazard / risk analysis, system design engineering, or operating and servicing power generation equipment
