Design Authority - Radiation Protection Lead - Bristol

Design Authority is:

  • The intelligent customer for the safety case through undertaking technical oversight during licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning and operation.
  • The part of NNB's organisation that understands, owns and controls the safety case during the design and construction phase.
  • Responsible for maintaining design integrity.
  • The successful candidate in their intelligent customer role, will be required to advise multi-disciplinary teams and the Responsible Designer on the adequacy of the safety cases produced by them.

    The role holder will need to develop effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including; Nuclear New Build Gen Co, EDF Engineering, external regulators and suppliers.


  • To understand the safety case related to radiation protection and other related topic areas, in particular, Radiological Consequences, Emergency Preparedness and Radioactive Waste Management.
  • Coordinate updates and changes to the site specific safety case related to radiation protection, and in line with project strategies for safety case production; managing impacts on other areas and supporting documents as a result.
  • To provide the the project with expert advice, support and guidance on the radiation protection topic that ensures compliance with the safety case and UK context (including UK best practices & legislation). This also includes leading on some of the Radiation Protection Assessment Findings from the EPR GDA process.
  • To provide technical advice and feed into contract specifications related to radiation monitoring equipment for the HPC site.
  • Support multi-disciplinary teams with radiological protection advice and requirements.
  • To represent the Design Authority with the regulators as the Design Authority topic lead for Radiation Protection (e.g. legislation, safety case, RP instrumentation, radioactive waste management, source term management, radiological zoning) as well as providing support to other topic areas (e.g. Radiological Consequences, Environment, Decommissioning, Emergency Preparedness, Radioactive Waste).
  • Source and embed best practices within radiological protection across the project, thereby creating a radiation protection safety culture.
  • Work effectively and maintain a strong relationship with EDF Engineering and Regulatory bodies.
  • Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent in a physical science, maths or engineering.
  • Chartered status would be desirable.
  • RPA status (current or historical) may be advantageous although is not essential.
  • Technical and Commercial Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrable evidence of safety case management/production related to the topic of Radiation Protection.
  • A track record in the Radiation Protection, Radiological Consequences, Emergency Preparedness, Radiological Waste and Environment topic areas, including making ALARP assessments and carrying out shielding calculations.
  • Good understanding of radiation monitoring instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of the UK context and a track record of working within radiation protection legislation.
  • Understanding of Nuclear power operations and best practices for the management of Radiation Protection.
  • Knowledge of interfacing with regulators including the management of regulatory meetings, compliance with UK regulations and production of supporting arguments and documentation.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Ability to operate autonomously, or as part of a team.
  • Understanding the needs of quality.
  • Decision making capability for resolution of specific technical and safety case issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
