As an Architectural Historian you will serve as a Subject Matter Expert on federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations as they apply to historic buildings, structures, objects, landscapes, and districts. You will evaluate buildings, structures, objects, landscapes and districts for NRHP eligibility and prepare determinations of eligibility. You will provide analysis and cultural resources content for NEPA documents and Section 106 technical reports. Support clients during agency and tribal consultation. Support for planning, engineering, and construction services to government, military, and commercial clients. The Architectural Historian position supports nearly all business groups in the company and serves as a nationwide resource. The position is responsible for reviewing undertakings for potential impacts to historic properties; coordinating consultation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and multiple state and federal agencies; evaluating properties for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), preparing determinations of eligibility, and completing state survey forms; managing cultural resource sub-consultants; assisting with project proposals; advising project managers and clients on the best approach for cultural resource compliance; and preparing NEPA and NHPA technical reports for a variety of large and small projects. The minimum qualifications for this position are:
  • Master's Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Four or more years of professional experience in historic preservation or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Oral and written English communication skills.
  • Must be willing and able to travel nationwide, as needed.
  • Documentation and research experience, including Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) documentation, historic structure reports, and NRHP eligibility evaluations and nominations.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
  • Familiarity with the National Historic Preservation Act's Section 106 consultation process.
  • 4-6 year experience as an Architectural Historian
  • Experience working in the consulting environment, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and be responsive to both internal and external clients
  • No specific geography in the USA is required, but preference would be Mid-Atlantic, Denver area, or the Northeast.
  • Cultural Resources Management familiarity with and experience on Department of Defense projects.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Cold War era military history, architectural/engineering design, and construction materials.
  • Field experience using established methods and techniques of applied architectural research for historic buildings and structures.
