The Engineering & Science Services and Skills Augmentation (ESSSA) contract provides engineering, scientific and engineering technician support to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL. The Jacobs ESSSA Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks to design and integrate GN&C systems for projects ranging from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS).


We are searching for highly qualified candidates to augment our SLS GN&C team in the areas of test, verification, and validation. The selected applicant will work in a customer/contractor integrated, collaborative team to:

  • Participate in task team reviews for the vehicle and system specification and support test, integration, verification, and validation of the SLS GN&C System.
  • Work with GN&C engineering leads and other engineering disciplines to analyze test data to verify successful closure of GN&C requirements.
  • Provide GN&C Software debugging support and execute software code unit tests to identify software coding errors.
  • Work with GN&C analyst engineers to enforce human rated software coding standards and correct any software coding issues/errors.
  • Develop and maintain thorough knowledge and understanding of GN&C system products and requirements as well as the relationships and working protocols with the different Integrated Design Teams (IDTs) and working groups. Identify and communicate any conflicts or issues between the GN&C's interface to Element, Flight Software (FSW), Mission and Fault Management (M&FM), Software Integration Lab (SIL), and Ground System Development Office (GSDO) testing including schedule, requirements, priorities, and approaches to testing and verification.
  • Work with GN&C product leads and representatives of the flight and ground crews to gather, communicate and track GN&C telemetry data needs. Assist in definition and prioritization of downlinked data parameters and advocate GN&C discipline data needs to the Vehicle Management Operational Flight Instrumentation/Developmental Flight Information task team representative at each GN&C model update.
  • Support the GN&C Verification plan and activities that comprise the GN&C model verification activities, SIL test cases and execution planning, development and maintenance of Operations and Maintenance Requirements and Specifications (OMRS), and the successful closure of GN&C Vehicle Management requirements. Remain cognizant of participating organizations, facilities, and schedule of activities.
  • Provide assistance to hardware and software integration and test engineers to determine required testing to demonstrate or verify requirements compliance, and to evaluate the success of the test from a GN&C perspective.

Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years of experience, a Masters with at least 6 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience. Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required.

Skills and experience should demonstrate:

  • Experience in ground and flight hardware and software life-cycle environments is required.
  • Experience and expertise in systems engineering and test support is required. Knowledge of systems engineering processes and activities used to transform functional, performance, interface, and other requirements into a coherent description of system functions, verification and validation, compliance and test is required.
  • Ability to read and write code in C/C++ is strongly desired. Experience encoding algorithms into a usable input to a software group is desired.
  • Experience and knowledge of Flight Software Requirements and Testing and Human Rating Standards (NPR 7150) is desired. Manned flight software knowledge is desired.
  • Fundamental knowledge of GN&C requirements, capabilities and constraints is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have engineering knowledge of NASA space craft and launch vehicle systems.
  • The ability to apply knowledge and experience to timely completion of excellent products and services is required.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and independent problem solving are required.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
