Job Description
Welding & Materials Engineer

Purpose of Position
This position is in the Charlotte turbine engineering department.  The engineer in this position will lead steam turbine design engineering in weld process developments, turbine product failure analysis, and provide materials engineering expertise on a wide variety of steam turbine related products.  This position's primary role will be to support the America's region steam turbine organization in the product and repair developments, root cause investigations of existing OEM (Siemens, Westinghouse, Parson, and Allis Chalmers) and non-OEM turbines, and supplier qualifications.  This position will also support general materials engineering needs for the steam turbine engineering organization in the Americas region.   

Position potential responsibilities includes:
- Leading weld repair developments, which is a core technology for steam turbine repair.  In this area of responsibility, this position will identify and lead R&D programs for new developments and improvements to existing processes for weld repairs on any needed OEM and non-OEM steam turbine products, but in particular for the legacy Westinghouse fleet.  
- Working with manufacturing weld engineers, support the development of state of the art technologies for weld processes.  
- Providing support on NDE technologies in development, use, and interpretations of non-destructive inspections for steam turbine products.
-  Providing support for the development of new repair methods and new product offerings from a material and process perspective.
- Providing project management of future steam turbine failure analysis efforts at Siemens or local labs.
- Supporting material and process specification creation and revisions for legacy OEM product.
- Supporting field service and customer in forced outage recovery programs and root cause investigations.
- Providing OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and non-OEM material support for all steam turbine product applications.
- Providing support on turbine component coating or cladding technologies and processes.
- Providing support on development of steam turbine component repair methods and designs
- Providing support for supplier qualifications in the America's region to support the steam turbine business.
- Potential travel of 10-15%

Experience Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years related work experience in failure analysis and welding techniques, such as for manual and mechanized GTAW and SMAW.  
- A minimum of 10 years with direct customer interactions.
- Must be knowledgeable in various aspects of materials behavior for metals and welding of metals (i.e. - failure of materials, creep, fatigue, erosion, corrosion, fretting, and effects on material from manufacturing processes).
- Must be experienced in material development and qualifications, or comparable experience.

Education Requirements
BS in Materials Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university/college

Ideal candidate skills include:
- Ability to interface directly with customer, field and factory personnel, and management
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to give technical presentations to customers or management
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Knowledgeable and experienced in all types of welding techniques for steam turbine materials.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in weld development and material qualification processes for steam turbine materials.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in supplier qualifications for steam turbine products, processes, and materials.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in leading root cause investigations for product failures.
- Knowledgeable and experienced with fracture mechanics testing and stress analysis.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in accessing remaining life of components desired.
- Knowledgeable in non-destructive examination highly desired.
- Knowledgeable with steam turbine products, or repair methods for major equipment
- Broad materials engineering knowledge and experience with capability to support fast paced service and manufacturing requests
