We are looking for a hard working Civil Construction Superintendent to join the Xcel Energy team in Maple Grove, Minnesota! In this position, you will be responsible for compiling, evaluating and administrating contracts for construction and rebuilding of high voltage electric transmission and substation civil construction projects in the Northern States Power Minnesota and Wisconsin operating areas.

You will be the main construction point of contact for these construction projects and will work closely with a variety of internal groups, including supply chain, engineering, and siting and land rights, as well as external line construction contractors, to ensure that transmission line construction projects are completed on time and within budget. You will also be responsible for successfully building and maintaining strong, long-term business relationships with contract companies

  • Responsible for the civil construction portion of transmission line construction projects
  • Ensure that the construction portion of each project is adequately resourced
  • Oversee the schedule and budget of the construction portions of projects
  • Execute the inspection plan for each project
  • Pre-qualify and maintain a list of approved contractors and inspectors
Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide input to the Project Manager and the Civil Department Manager on the labor resource strategy for each project (in-house, time and material thru contractor blankets, fixed bids, EPC, etc
  • Advise the project team as to any known risks to the project success
  • Work with the project team to manage the risks and to respond to contingencies
  • Secure all required construction resources for projects
  • Qualify contractors to bid on projects
  • Issue RFPs
  • Determine who is the successful bidder
  • Also Manage Time and Material blankets with contractors
  • Ensure that construction is completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications/scope of work
  • Monitor the day-to-day cost and schedule of construction
  • Report status
  • Develop labor/equipment and construction project forecasts; these forecasts roll up to the PM overall project forecast
  • Provide the Project Controls group with schedule/budget updates to be rolled into the master project schedule/budget
  • Establish cost/schedule and other performance metrics for project
  • Include metrics in contracts
  • Manage Contractor relations
  • Evaluate contractor performance
  • Provide feedback to contractors on expectations and how well contractor is meeting expectations
  • Discharge contractors when necessary
  • Authorize payment release for work performed
  • Responsible for the execution of the project inspection plan
  • Responsible for procuring the necessary inspection resources
  • Appropriate resources will vary by project but may include Consulting Engineers, Engineering technicians, 3rd party inspectors, and in-house construction type personnel
  • Ensure there are adequate inspection and/or monitoring of all work to establish compliance with requirements, and to maintain appropriate records in the project file
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited curriculum, or related Bachelor's degree (equivalency to an ABET accredited degree would be recognized by ABET as having "substantial equivalency" or through a "mutual recognized agreement") (6 years experience in a related field may substitute for the degree)
  • 6 years experience and knowledge of techniques, materials, terminology of field construction and inspection activities
  • Accustomed to the construction environment and able to travel away from the principal office occasionally
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Demonstrates and applies in-depth knowledge of construction management concepts, practices and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate issue resolution
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Additional education/training in Project Management practices is strongly preferred.
  • Heavy/large construction project experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • PMP Preferred
  • Military Leadership experience encouraged
