Job Overview:

This position is for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer I to support the Design Engineering Function out of our Charlotte, North Carolina office. Qualified candidates should possess several years of design engineering experience on combined cycle/fossil power plant construction projects.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
  • Perform engineering tasks independently seeking validation only as needed
  • Provide guidance to junior Mechanical Engineers and/or Designers
  • Meet project schedule commitments with supervision
  • Coordinate internally with other disciplines and externally with suppliers on system design and equipment selection
  • Apply proper power industry design criteria to mechanical systems
  • Utilize supporting client documents and information (e.g., operating data, vendor data, O&M manuals, and plant drawings) needed to support engineering activities
  • Read and understand portions of the EPC Contract applicable to mechanical design
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe work practices for site visits
  • Participate in project meetings at various locations (e.g., field, vendor, and customer) as part of project team
  • Participate in client presentations as part of a project team
  • Obtain review and approval for mechanical engineering deliverables
  • Understand corporate Q/A procedures and apply them to daily activities
  • Be familiar and comply with all relevant codes and standards applicable to project and equipment (e.g., ASME, ANSI, and OSHA regulations) in execution of design as applicable
  • Coordinate with project personnel to resolve Requests for Information (RFIs), Non-conformance Reports (NCRs), and Field Change Requests (FCRs)
  • Support design activities associated with project database
  • Travel to jobsite with others and provide engineering support to construction, commissioning, and startup
  • Travel to plant sites with others to perform inspections and assessments
  • Apply system requirements from design basis and design criteria with minimal supervision from others
  • Ability to develop P&IDs based on project scope of work, design basis, design criteria, and vendor information; familiar with power system line lists, equipment lists, and valve lists
  • Ability to perform calculations for flow velocity, pressure drop, pump performance, and heat transfer
  • Understanding of performance parameters of power plant equipment (e.g., pumps, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers), valves, and piping components
  • Ability to apply corporate piping and equipment specifications
  • Ability to generate system resistance curve and utilize with pump/fan curve to select equipment
  • Ability to establish electrical power requirements based on mechanical equipment operating parameters or conditions
  • Understanding of mechanical systems and their interrelationships (e.g., steam, condensate, and cooling water)
  • Ability to apply relevant codes and standards to equipment and system design
  • System design and operating conditions (e.g., flow, pressure, and temperature)
  • Basic knowledge of major mechanical equipment characteristics
  • Working knowledge of BOP / Secondary Side mechanical equipment characteristics
  • Piping and equipment sizes to meet system design conditions Calculations
  • Understand selection of piping line class specification based on project piping specifications and system design conditions with guidance from others
  • Experience/Familiar with equipment specification and data sheets development based on system design calculations
  • Understand the process of technical bid evaluation including resolution of exceptions and clarifications
Basic Qualifications:
  • Candidate must possess a Bachelors or Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • 7-10 years of detailed project engineering experience
  • Process design experience within the power industry is required
  • Familiar with engineering procedures, mechanical standards and codes (B31.1)
  • Demonstrates a broad technical knowledge of detail combined cycle power plant system
  • PE License is preferred
