Department Overview

The Energy Policy and Procurement (EPP) organization procures electricity, capacity, and ancillary services to serve the needs of bundled electric customers. In addition, EPP procures natural gas, pipeline capacity, and storage capacity on behalf of residential and small commercial customers, and for both utility-owned and contracted third-party electric generation. EPP is responsible for the front-office and back-office functions associated with power and gas procurement. Front-office functions entail planning, contracting, trading, scheduling, and dispatching electricity and natural gas for PG&E's customers. Back-office functions entail administering procurement agreements and ensuring timely and accurate payments to the CAISO and third-party power and gas suppliers. EPP also actively participates in regulatory and legislative proceedings that shape the design and implementation of state, regional, and federal energy regulation and policy. In addition, EPP is responsible for long-term planning, risk management, and compliance functions related to PG&E's energy portfolio.

Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide creative algorithmic solutions to data analytics and optimization problems in the development of short-term electric procurement decisions and recommendations of strategies for short-term electric bidding, scheduling, and procurement in the CAISO electric markets. Analysis will include application of statistical techniques and optimization methods to relevant electric and gas markets, market prices, forecasts of resource and demand positions and prices, assumptions and forecasts used in analytical and optimization models, and operating plans for the company's electric supply and demand portfolios. Knowledge of current technical developments in analytics and optimization is essential.
The Senior Day Ahead Analyst reports to the Manager of Market Design Integration, Short Term Electric Supply in Energy Supply Management.


Minimum Qualifications:
•Bachelor's degree in a quantitative disciple such as engineering, math, economics, operations research, or related disciple; or equivalent experience. Demonstrated technical capabilities in data analysis and/or optimization.
•A minimum of three years of related job experience (including relevant graduate-level internships or doctoral research).

•Support maintenance and enhancement of existing data analysis and optimization models used to support Short-Term Electric Supply's least cost dispatch business processes; provide analytical and modeling support to enable improvement of data analysis and optimization models used in electric resource scheduling and planning
•Develop new data analysis and optimization models using available optimization software and tools
•Interpret data analysis and optimization model results for asset managers and PG&E upper management
•Validate or recommend changes to bidding/scheduling strategies used to participate in CAISO electric markets
•Provide technical guidance to schedulers and analysts in making least cost dispatch plans for PG&E's electric generation resources
•Lead small teams to respond to ad hoc requests for analyses of impacts of electric procurement issues as needed
•Represent Short-Term Electric Supply in public forums as Subject Matter Expert on issues that impact electric procurement processes
