Jacobs AFSS contract at NASA Ames offers an exciting work atmosphere assisting NASA's mission in aeronautics, space exploration, and earth science. Support of critical laboratories, office buildings, and test facilities are important parts of our operation.


Employees in this classification perform Journeymen level mechanical work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the air handlings units, chillers, boilers, VAV's, VRV's, fume hoods, pumps and motors under general supervision. Assignments can be received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions or employees may be expected to schedule their own work, determine work priorities. At this level employees are expected to diagnose problems independently and determine the appropriate method and procedure needed to complete the work. Working with the Lead and co-workers, the HVAC Technician is expected to ensure that the work specifications conform to shop standards. May work with the Lead person to order materials needed for work. Must comply with applicable federal, state, NASA, OSHA and environmental laws and regulations. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment {PPE} at all times as determined by position and duties. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and able to handle potentially high-stress situations. Create and maintain a positive team atmosphere with effective interpersonal skills

Characteristic Duties:

• Follow truck maintenance schedule and keep an organized and clean truck / workspace

• Works in areas of controlled access not open to unqualified individuals.

• Perform preventive tasks as assigned, and provide feedback on potential improvements

• Excellent customer service skills with the desire to exceed customer expectation

• Responds to equipment malfunctions and failures during off-hours on a call back basis

• Troubleshoots and repair faulty equipment

• Installs new equipment, including VFD's, motors, valves, pumps, actuators, dampers etc. for repairs and alterations in HVAC systems

• Works with MAXIMO {CMMS} to input time and issue work orders

• May assist in overseeing contractors to ensure safety regulations are being followed

• Responsible for coordinating work to ensure the maintenance and integrity of the HVAC systems

• Follows shop procedures for scheduling system outages

• Ability to obtain and maintain NASA and California Air National Guard clearance

• Ensures that safety rules are followed

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program (or equivalent education and/or experience) for journey level HVAC technician. Must have a minimum of 5 years relevant experience within HVAC and experience with low voltage equipment & repairs. Must demonstrate knowledge of HVAC theory and practices sufficient to plan work independently on mechanical distribution equipment. Understanding of, and willingness to comply with, electrical and work safety procedures including National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards. Ability to handle tools of the trade (multi-meters, refrigeration gauges), to work in awkward positions of crouching or bending etc. for a period of time, and to perform moderately heavy lifting. Must be able to read metering schematic, wiring, installation diagrams, etc. Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical troubles and then make repairs on equipment. Ability to perform new installations on HVAC systems, if permitted. Must possess a valid California driver's license, a good driving record and the ability to operate automatic transmission vehicles and may operate a high lift truck. Must have and maintain certification in CPR, First Aid training, & Confined Space. Must be available to work overtime and available for callbacks.

Refrigeration and pump rebuild certifications a plus.
