Our Buildings and Infrastructure team provides multidisciplinary solutions to water, highways, transport, environment, waste and energy clients in Ireland, the UK and beyond. Our highways team is one of the largest in the country, and we are currently working on a number of Transport Infrastructure Ireland and National Transport Authority schemes, as well working with a large number of local authorities across the country. Our project teams deliver the full range of engineering services from feasibility and planning through preliminary and detailed design to procurement, construction supervision and operations and maintenance. Jacobs has an enviable reputation in the Highways sector as a result of our portfolio of high profile and challenging projects including:
  • Dunkettle Interchange Improvement Scheme, Cork: as Lead Consultant we successfully delivered this scheme through planning and EIS stage, and we have recently been successfully appointed to the role of Designer and Employer's Representative through design and construction phases.
  • N17/N18 Motorway PPP scheme: we have a large team of site personnel undertaking the role of Employer's Representative on this scheme, the largest civil engineering project currently underway in Ireland;
  • N69 Listowel Bypass: design and consultancy services including preparation of structures design, EIS and planning procedures;
  • N40 Traffic Study: a wide-ranging study of Cork's road network including proposals to manage traffic along this key artery including standard junction upgrades, Smart Motorway and other ITS proposals;
  • Tunnel Operations and Maintenance: contract and project management services to TII for the operations and maintenance of the Dublin Tunnel, Jack Lynch Tunnel and Motorway Traffic Control Centre;
  • National Transport Authority: we have delivered the new Regional Modelling Systems over the last number of years as part of our Modelling Services Framework with the NTA;
  • National Transport Authority: we also work with the NTA as Technical Advisor on their Transport Projects framework, delivering a wide and varied range of transport and infrastructure tasks including junction assessments; bus market procurement; integrated ticketing; project appraisals; scheme option assessments; bus network planning; and rail network studies;
  • N15 Blackburn Bridge: Designer and Employer Representative role including contract management and construction supervision for Donegal County Council;
  • As well as working on a range of projects in Ireland, we also support Jacobs teams across the UK and further afield and we have recently worked on a number of projects for Essex County Council and Transport Scotland.

Position Summary

Complex highways and transportation schemes require a multi-disciplinary approach, with Principal Engineers in the pivotal role of Lead Designers and Project Managers. As such, you will be a key member in delivering projects. As Principal Engineer, you will have a strong technical background in highways engineering including highways alignment, drainage, pavement and accommodation works as well as knowledge of planning, environmental and procurement legislation and practice. You will be required to regularly interface and take a lead role in engaging with other disciplines, such as geotechnical, structures, environmental and traffic, building on your experience in differing aspects of engineering and enabling you to successfully deliver projects to our clients.

As Lead Designer and Project Manager you will take responsibility for the delivery of the highways element of a range of highways schemes and you will manage staff in the delivery of technical documents and drawings, feasibility and design reports, specifications and tender documents, and contract management of public works contracts.

You will attend client and stakeholder meetings; meet with interested parties including the public, landowners, statutory bodies; and contractors. You will project manage:
  • Design development using software including Bentley MXROAD, Civil 3D, AutoCAD and Microdrainage.
  • Preparing contract documents, managing tender processes, assessing tenders and dealing with scheme procurements;
  • Writing technical reports as well as other reports for non-technical audiences, such as public consultation reports;
  • Visiting site locations, reviewing scheme designs, addressing environmental and design challenges collaboratively with our clients and internally with other Jacobs disciplines;
  • Managing sub-consultants and ensuring high quality deliverables;
  • Assisting and training more junior colleagues.
Experience required:
  • An accredited Civil/Structural BEng (Honours) Engineering Degree (NFQ level 8 and above) or equivalent
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Proven Project Management and design skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Excellent literacy and numerical skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Focus on results and project delivery
  • Previous work experience in the highways industry either for a contractor, consultant or public sector organisation

  • Knowledge of TII Publications, DMRB or equivalent road design standards
  • Knowledge of Irish, UK or EU planning, procurement and environmental legislation
  • Full Clean Driver's License
  • Post-Graduate Diploma or Master's in an engineering, technical, management or related field.
