Jacobs has enviable reputation within the Highways UK consultancy sector as a result of a portfolio of high profile projects and frameworks with clients that include the Highways England, Transport Scotland, Welsh Government, National Contractors and numerous Local Authorities.

Due to the expansion of our portfolio in securing additional work within an existing local authority framework in respect of the design and delivery of strengthening and improvement highway bridge projects we are looking to increase our team. The successful delivery of various bridge structures has resulted in an increasing workload and this within a framework which has the horizon of a further five years in contract.

As a result of this framework expansion, we are now seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Technical Director (Bridges and Structures) to provide technical management, team leadership and the drive of the delivery of a programme of works. The role will also involve managing and developing an integrated team of structural engineers and graduates to meet the demands of the business and aim for a best in class service. This role is to be based in our Chelmsford office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, growth and development of a regional Highways Bridges and Structures team
  • Prepare proposals and designs from feasibility to detailed design stages
  • Offer technical direction to other design engineers, technicians and graduate team members
  • Manage and develop relationships with clients, contractors and third party organisations
  • Liaise and interface with multiple internal disciplines and offices (Highways, Technology, Geotechnical, Rail, Transport Planning and Environmental)
  • Ownership and responsibility for project financial management and monitoring
  • Undertake team management duties to include annual staff appraisals, performance reviews, recruitment of staff etc.
  • Be driven to improve team performance with an engaged and considerate approach
  • Provide guidance and support on all aspects of personal and constructional Health and Safety issues

Essen tial Requirements

  • Degree in Structural / Civil Engineering (min. 2:1 grade)
  • Must be a Chartered Member of ICE, IStructE or equivalent
  • Substantial experience working on highways bridges and structures projects for local authority
  • Working knowledge of different forms of contract and procurement options (NEC3 etc.)
  • Thorough understanding and practical application of the DMRB and EN Eurocodes
  • Good understanding of roles and duties under CDM 2015 regulations
  • Proven ability to deliver programmed works on time and under budget
  • Experience of technically engaging with client representatives and staff at a senior level
  • Ability to drive teams to deliver on time and under budget

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of ECI or Design and Build projects
  • Experience of construction supervision
  • PRINCE2 Accreditation
  • Knowledge and experience of Health and Safety training in the infrastructure sector
