This is a NASA Test Evaluation and Support contract position; it may be assigned to Jacobs Technology Inc. or a Teammate company.

The function of the position is to perform routine work requiring application of standard techniques, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks. Position involves working in the Technical Services Design & Analysis Group at the NASA White Sands Test Facility (WSTF). The group performs two primary functions - 1) Reviews documentation of WSTF pressure systems for compliance with NASA requirements which often reflect national consensus standards and provides assistance to various organizations on site in the design and development of pressure systems, 2) Develops system designs and design requirements, performs design reviews, and analyzes systems regarding design calculations and failure modes and hazards. The successful candidate will be involved in both functions of the Design and Analysis Group and will provide professional engineering support with increasing independent accomplishment. Responsibilities will include reviewing system documentation, identifying discrepancies between actual and recorded configuration, mechanical analysis through various calculations, system and vessel testing and documentation of system compliance. Perform specific and limited engineering tasks of a broader assignment under the direction of an experienced engineer. Performs a variety of routine engineering tasks and applies standard engineering practices, equations and techniques to assigned situations and problems.
Requires an ABET-accredited engineering degree: Mechanical Engineering or similar engineering degree preferred. BS degree and one (1) to two (2) years engineering experience, or MS degree from an accredited engineering school. Demonstrated mechanical design experience and a working knowledge of fluid pressure systems is highly desirable. Prior experience in pressure system maintenance, trouble shooting, and failure analysis along with some experience with 2D/3D drawing packages (e.g. AutoCAD, ProEngineer, etc.) is highly preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required. Experience in a Union working environment is desirable. Must be a United States citizens. Must have a valid driver's license and pass a drug screening and physical examination. Engineering Technology degrees do not qualify for this position.

Essential Functions:


Position requires computer operation to accomplish tasks. Must be able to sit for extended duration to perform some tasks. Must be able to work in shop, laboratory, and test facility environment. This includes standing, walking, and occasional climbing or crawling around test facilities. Some WSTF test systems are located outdoors and/or in hazardous test areas. Some work will require use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, hearing protection, eye protection and other associated protective equipment. Individuals must be able to pass physical examinations necessary for approval to work in these areas.


Majority of work is in a climate-controlled office environment; however work in an outdoor environment is also required at times. As necessary, must be able to travel to other work areas, be aware of safety requirements for those areas, and work within those constraints (e.g. access procedures and proper PPE). Must have the ability to work with hazardous materials in a Hazardous Testing Environment (materials such as, but not limited to, high pressure gases, hazardous fluids/propellants, explosives, and cryogenics).


Common personal computer software including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. May need to work with Mathcad, Pro/Engineer, Pro/MECHANICA, AutoCAD and related packages to accomplish work. Use of calculator, printer, fax, scanner, telephone, filing cabinets, and other standard office equipment is required. May be required to drive government vehicles, must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.


Regular attendance and punctuality are essential in this high collaborative environment and required for consistent customer service. This is a full time position which may require overtime in support of project schedules or other priority assignments as determined by Management. Occasional travel may be required.


Test programs at WSTF often have an aggressive schedule with daily on-site interaction with a NASA project manager. Must be able to function as a member of a team in a fast paced environment. It is vital that the individuals involved are team-players, willing and able to multi-task and redirect their efforts as needed for the success of the team. All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and Company safety standards. Must be a U.S. Citizens. Must pass a Federal background investigation and maintain access to government facilities and computer systems. Must submit to and pass a drug screening.
