Vacancy Overview

A key part of Safety, Security, and Assurance (SS&A) is Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) which maintains a small team (typically three Evaluators) on each of our eight nuclear sites.  These are supported by a larger group of specialists based at our company HQ at Barnwood.  INA personnel provide independent assessments of company compliance with its nuclear, radiological and industrial safety, security, health, and environmental obligations, and whether they are operating in a manner that promotes high levels of performance in those areas – in effect INA is an “internal regulator”.

A position is now available for an INA Evaluator at Hunterston B Nuclear Power Station. (Positions at other locations may also become available)

Nature and Scope

A strong, competent and respected internal regulator is viewed by senior management as being essential for the long term success of EDF Energy.  Within the worldwide nuclear industry INA has a growing reputation for providing effective internal regulation and challenge, and is now seen as one of the leaders in this field.

Site-based INA personnel operate in a fast-moving environment and each site team needs a wide range of skills and experience. We are currently looking for an individual with experience in areas such as Operations, Maintenance or Engineering (Individuals with experience in other areas may be considered). These technical competencies have to be complemented by a range of “soft” attributes such as an understanding of organisational behaviour traits and of course highly developed interpersonal skills.

The work consists of on-site inspections, observations of activities, review and analysis of data to identify shortfalls and adverse trends, and the instigation of necessary improvements. Good practices are also highlighted to enable the organisation to reinforce them.  Findings and supporting evidence are typically captured in a succinct report which is presented to station leaders.  If INA findings are to be accepted and acted upon, both written and verbal submissions must be of high quality.

Hence, excellent written and spoken communication ability, together with strong relationship building and influencing skills, are vital.  Recent senior level experience of undertaking an internal regulation type of role would be considered valuable, especially if it was gained within the nuclear, or other engineering orientated, externally regulated industry.  High performing candidates at an earlier stage in their career will also be considered.

Comprehensive training will be provided for the role through a formal qualification and mentoring process.  It would be advantageous (although not essential) for candidates to have an understanding of nuclear generation, the nuclear industry regulatory framework, and the principles of assurance.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
  • Candidates should be educated to a minimum of HNC (or equivalent) in a science or engineering biased subject. Membership of a relevant professional body would be beneficial.
  • Preferably 5+ years track record of implementing, advising or regulating safety, security, health and environment (SSHE) arrangements within the nuclear, or other engineering orientated and highly regulated, industry (including defence). Whilst nuclear experience is preferred, this is not essential.
  • An ability to think independently to identify trends, behaviours and insights that could be effective at helping the organisation improve its SSHE performance.
  • Good analytical skills to support critical reviews of performance.
  • Clear, concise communication skills to ensure effective delivery of verbal or written feedback.
  • Ability to build relationships and team working at all levels in order to establish networks and optimise their use for influencing.
  • The skill and tenacity to deliver complex and occasionally unwelcome messages under potentially challenging situations.
  • A proven track record of liaising with external SSHE regulators would be an advantage
