Head of Hybrids/Cape Town/1.8 - 2.2 Million Rand 

My client is one of the world's leaders in renewable energy and are looking for an equally ambitious candidate to run their new hybrid department in Africa. You will be responsible for leading the development and structuring of new solar business models and develop projects from early opportunity through the development cycle to construction start. Your network and experience in the region and your understanding of our new customers business will enable you to creatively identify and approach customers and secure pipeline projects. You will furthermore, in close collaboration with our existing team structure and negotiate complex transactions, lead external and internal development processes, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams is key in order to successfully lead the projects to execution.

Your typical working day will be impossible to describe, as each day will be different and full of surprises. However, areas of work will include opportunity identification, market analysis, customer sales and marketing, contract negotiations, technical reviews of solutions dependent on customer infrastructure, partnership and management of contractors and development of development team. The role will also likely involve with existing and new co-investors of client, and development of financing structures as the concept evolves.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead development of a New Ventures strategy for Africa, with a particular focus on the mining industry and other customers currently relying on diesel and HFO for power generation
  • Lead roll-out of the clients solar leasing concept for the region including development of team
  • Lead efforts to identify and secure customers for the client 
  • Lead negotiations for project acquisition and manage the acquisition/transaction process
  • Manage technical and EPC contractors and stakeholders
  • If needed for New Ventures projects: lead and coordinate internal and external project development efforts including securing land, obtaining required local permits and approvals, securing interconnection rights from utilities, negotiating PPAs with utilities, establishing EPC and O&M agreements, as well as securing project equity and debt financing.
  • Lead market reviews, analyzing regulatory issues and policy supports for solar and develop development strategies for countries or regions
  • Lead bidding processes to submit bid packages in response to Request for Proposals (RFPs) from offtakers
  • Manage development teams, often numbering 10-20 individuals, including internal resources, consultants and development subcontractors

Qualifications:


  • 15 year + professional experience from operational positions in mining industry at various locations, and/or power solutions from large diesel/HFO generation suppliers
  • Origination of power supply deals either via equipment supply, lease agreements or Power Purchase Agreements
  • Working knowledge of power plant sizing, integration and interface requirements
  • Practical know-how of mining operations, open cast and/or underground mining
  • Experience with contract negotiation and purchasing
  • Significant experience with tax and duties and project development in emerging markets
  • Understanding of power markets and in particular thermal energy systems
  • Working knowledge and understanding of power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements, permitting requirements and EPC contract terms and conditions is preferable, but not required

Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of technical solutions, infrastructure and set-up for off-grid and weak grid power supply
  • Commercial mind-set and understanding of financial analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including presentation software and Excel
  • Self-driven with ability to work under pressure and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
  • Flexible and adaptable with a “can-do” attitude
  • Organized and methodical
  • Advanced written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Prepared to travel extensively
  • Preferably both English and French speaking
