HIGH LEVEL JOB DESCRIPTION/SCOPE:
This position is relied upon for technical expertise to support strategic plans and projects for refinery utilization, optimization, and process safety improvements. This project portion of this position will focus on evaluation and process design for projects. The role will also assist in troubleshooting of more complex unit and refinery system issues along with mentoring less experienced engineers on problem solving. This position will report to the technical organization.

Responsibilities include:
• Develop design basis and front-end engineering for minor and major capital projects. Examples include long term capital project vision planning, conceptual project development, technology selection, and detailed engineering. Serve as project manager for early phase project work as required.
• Lead or participate in facility process improvement studies. Evaluate changes on refinery and individual unit operations. Perform economic evaluations for options. Carry out various studies to improve plant safety (PHA, LOPA), reliability, and economics.
• Prepare process design basis and specifications for revamps and new projects (e.g. hydraulic studies/heat and material balances, sizing of equipment). Utilize process simulators for evaluation of unit performance and design changes.
• Serve as Chevron representative for projects in Engineering Contractors offices
• Develop procedures and support for commissioning of new facilities.
• Facilitate agreements on operating philosophies and control strategies on plant units.
• Facilitate / lead incident investigations
• Mentor less experienced process engineers in use of tools, trouble-shooting, process monitoring, and providing recommendations to Operations for optimization and safe and reliable operation.
• Provide support for unit turnarounds.
• Support unit Process Engineers with technical support for day to day operations for more complex opportunities
• Work with the Process Technology Business Improvement Network (BIN) for assigned technologies in order to facilitate conducting Best Practice Audits, training, routine process monitoring reviews, and development and roll-out of BIN and Process Engineering Center of Focus (PECoF) initiatives.
• Lead or coordinate refinery performance studies such as Solomon study
• Provide assistance to HES team for changes to governmental regulation and determine their effect on the refinery;

Required Qualifications
• A Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering
• A minimum of 10 years of related process engineering experience supporting a refinery/petrochemical plant/oil and gas processing
• Experience in process design
• Advanced understanding of how equipment functions in the field and overall plant operation
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong ability to work with cross functional teams, able to communicate technical ideas to a wide range of groups within the refinery.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience supporting refinery process units
• Experience leading or supporting phase gated capital projects process

CRITICAL SELECTION CRITERIA:
1. Technical:
• 10 - 12 years' experience supporting unit operations/projects in a refinery or petrochemical plant.
• Completed at least two assignments in area of expertise (typically 18 to 24 mos. in duration)
• Interest in continued technical development
• Demonstrated practical application of the CHE fundamentals of mass transfer/distillation, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and kinetics
• Experience participating in studies such as PHA, IPR/ROI, LOPA, AOA, etc.
