Job Description
To exploit business opportunities and ensure that products and services meet the required quality standards, by designing and developing new, or modification of existing, product lines to meet actual or anticipated future customer needs.
The position is one of the main points of contact for the Product Development / Product Line Groups, and Customer Services team who determine the product requirements, as well as Manufacturing and their support team for making the products in line with the design parameters determined by Engineering.
The role is measured by the successful leading of assigned engineering projects, and accurate interpretation of product specification into effective designs/drawings that can be used to manufacture the products against time and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Perform general design duties as assigned by Line Management carrying out such duties as:
  • Prepare detailed design proposals and engineering cost estimates for development of electrical, electronic and firmware design related to existing products and technologies. 
  • Preparation of calculations and design packages for performance of design review.
  • Attend design reviews or sales meetings for new and existing products if required
  • Implement modifications to existing products to meet internal or external customer needs.
  • Development and maintenance of test procedures, carrying out appropriate liaison with the Assembly / Test Technician on testing programmes.
  • Production and maintenance of engineering drawings for use in the manufacture, assembly and testing of products using CAD systems.
  • Responsible for checking of manufacturing drawings, design calculations, test reports and design layouts.
  • Development and maintenance of bills of materials within the Product Data Management (PDM) systems to ensure correct manufacture of equipment related to electronics.
  • Provide Engineering assistance to the Quality Assurance, Manufacturing and Assembly Departments in the NCR process of manufactured, purchased and Assembled Products and parts for electronic devices.
  • Support/assist with workload and activities of the Electronics Technicians.
  • Provide and schedule support of Electronics activities involved in the R&D process.
  • Preparation and updating of Electronics data in Technical Documents including Operating Manuals.
  • Provide manual assistance in the process of assembly & testing of existing and new products as required.
  • Prepare and update technical documents to create a high quality technical interface for use by other departments.
  • Production and maintenance of test requests, test reports, job reports, and investigation reports.
  • Conduct evaluations and design reviews of new and existing product designs.
  • Identify any opportunities for improvement (OFI) regarding design, planning and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in the investigation and review of field and problem job reports.
Assess cost implications of design changes or new designs, informing projected costs to Line Management.
Provide dispositions for internal and sub-contract manufacturing design-non-conformances .
Participate in liaison with clients, where applicable, in conjunction with Product Line personnel, Customer Services, etc.
Any other delegated responsibilities as instructed by Line Management within the timeframe specified in a safe and efficient manner to meet business requirements, provided the instruction is reasonable and you are capable and deemed competent to fulfil these.
Experience / Competence
  • Experience of SMT and through-hole PCB design for downhole tools.
  • Experience of analogue, digital and mixed-signal circuit design
  • Experience of firmware in C and assembler for an embedded target
  • Experience of at least one high-level programming language
  • Awareness of ROHS compliance and high-temperature solder techniques
Qualifications
  • Degree in relevant Engineering field or a related discipline
  • BEng or MSc in Electrical Engineering or a related subject
