Job Description

This is a standalone position outside of the Relay Technician hierarchy and is a position that primarily supports nuclear switchyards. A Transmission Nuclear Relay technician will be responsible for the transmission relay work required in the nuclear switchyards including PMs, modifications, capital upgrades, and trouble response. Specific site training will be required. Technicians will be expected to lead other transmission relay techs in nuclear switchyards as needed. This role will not include work inside the nuclear plant beyond the switchyard.

Transmission Relay Tech - Nuclear performs the following with Minimal Supervision and Increased Latitude for Un-Reviewed Work:
  • Demonstrated ability to pass all required nuclear maintenance worker training
  • Has professional safety behavior and holds high expectation of others to work safely and follow safe work practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the use and the advocacy of Human Performance Tools and requirements
  • Meets nuclear training requirements applicable to the switchyard P&C activities
  • Understands the use of the NATF/INFO Risk Assessment process and how to use it effectively with the nuclear organization
  • Has expert verbal communications skills and frequent use of 3-way communication
  • Can review and critique isolation procedures suitable for a nuclear switchyard, coaches team in proper techniques for writing and execution of these procedures
  • Remains focused under internal and external pressures. Resilient to conflict, leads team while under pressure and ensures all distractions are eliminated.
  • Can lead any construction or maintenance activities in nuclear switchyards, no matter the sensitivity and complexity
  • Has the demonstrated ability to conduct remote logic testing via mirror bits, using MB tester or relay MB outputs along with knowledge of end to end testing with time synched test sets
  • Utilizing old and new drawings and existing conditions, is fully capable of finding and correct design errors that affect scheme operation.
  • Is expert at installing, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting carriers, tone equipment, traps and tuners, MP or EM relays.
  • Can lead teams to ensure paperwork and files are accurate and submitted in timely fashion with no issues
  • Can lead other technicians to organize, develop and execute procedures and work plans to complete a tasks with error free performance in a nuclear switchyard
  • Has expert knowledge to trouble shoot P&C circuits within any station or protection scheme
  • Can independently commission schemes by interacting with ECC/Nuclear
  • Has working knowledge of complex SCADA systems, with sound ability to troubleshoot wiring and I/O associated SCADA systems, legacy RTU's, SEL3354's, SEL3610's, DFR's.

  • Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements noted in Transmission Relay Tech II.
  • Demonstrated ability to pass all required nuclear maintenance worker training
  • Meets nuclear training requirements applicable to the switchyard P&C activities
  • Understands the use of the NATF/INFO Risk Assessment process and how to use it effectively with the nuclear organization
  • Demonstrated availability for after-hours work and call out rotation.
  • Expert technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Maintains accurate records and files and ensures all team documents are submitted in timely fashion.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must have a valid State Driver's License
  • Associate degree in Engineering technology (or equivalent) and 5 years related experience in relay/ substation work OR High School diploma or equivalent and 7 years related experience in relay/ substation work


Specific Requirements:
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading
