SunEdison continues to expand its footprint in India and is looking to be a leader in utility-scale as well as rooftop solar power segments.
In an effort to realise its ambitious target to add 15.2 GW renewable energy capacity in India over the next 5 to 7 years, SunEdison recently signed an agreement with the state government of Tamil Nadu to set up 2 GW of solar power and wind energy capacity over the next 5 years, in projects expected to be developed in the utility-scale segment.
Tamil Nadu is already the largest wind power generating state in India, and also has one of the most aggressive solar power policies. According to the policy announced in 2012, the state aims to have 3 GW operational solar power capacity by the end of this year, and an additional 1 GW every year thereafter.
SunEdison has signed agreements with other state governments to set up huge renewable energy capacities. The company plans to add 5 GW of solar power capacity in Rajasthan and 5 GW capacity through wind and solar power projects in Karnataka.
SunEdison has already been involved in some landmark solar power projects in India over the last few years. The company set up the first canal-top solar power project in the world in the state of Gujarat, and the company is also working on rooftop solar power projects for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, recently commissioning 1.7 MW capacity on eight new stations. This is in addition to the operational 2.7 MW capacity and 1.7 MW capacity currently under development.
SunEdison also signed an agreement with Adani Enterprises to set up India’s largest solar PV modules manufacturing unit in Gujarat, which is expected to require a total investment of $4 billion.
