South Tyneside Council is hoping to create up to 1700 jobs on site with a focus in marine, offshore and the energy industry.
The newly announced project is part of the new enterprise zone for the north east which includes a site at South Shields.
South Shields Riverside is the first site to win Government support and will specialise in marine, offshore and energy sectors as well as creating a deep water quay on the Tyne.
Councilor Iain Malacom of south Tyneside council has said this project will create up to 1700 jobs and is crucial for the regeneration of the surrounding area. He said: “This is great news for the people of South Tyneside..Securing an enterprise zone site for South Shields shows testament to the strength of partnership working between the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the public sector. The project will generate a range of higher skilled and higher paid jobs providing a more diverse business service to further develop South Tyneside
