How do you write the perfect CV?

Writing an effective CV is easy once you know how! There is no definitive way to write a CV but there is essential information that must be included and certain 'no-no's' to avoid.

1. Include all the relevant information
Quite often candidates will forget the vital information. Generally your CV should include your personal/contact information, education and qualifications, work history/experience, relevant skills to the job application, interest and your achievements.
2. Put your recent achievements first
Always start your list of Achievements and experience with the most recent first. Employers will want to read about your current experience and achievements as these are likely to be the most relevant to the job you are applying for.
3. Choose your design and structure
Presentation is key! A successful CV will be clearly presented and well structured. Remember an employer is likely to see anywhere potentially from 20-100 CV's for a single job so improve your chances of having your CV read properly by really focusing on layout and structure.
4. Don't make it too lengthy
It's unlikely an employer will read every CV cover to cover and many will make a fairly quick judgement within the first few sections of your CV. As a general rule of thumb 2 sides of A4 is a good measure. Keep your content concise and avoid too much waffling or unnecessary information that isn't related to the job.
5. Make your CV unique to the job
A 'one size fits all' CV is not the ideal approach when making a new job application. Its good to have a general CV that you can tweak to fit the job you are applying for. Work your way through the requirements of the job and ensure your CV ticks all the boxes.
6. Be positive!
Avoid any negative language or experiences. Try to describe and challenges as opportunities for personal development or explain what experiences you gained from any particular scenarios.
7. Include your relevant skills
You must ensure you include the skills that match the job profile but also try to include skills that will make you stand out from the crowd i.e. specific communication or IT skills.
8. Include your hobbies and interests
It is worth briefly including your hobbies and interests especially if they highlight positions of responsibility or indicate your skills and creativity.
9. Include referees/references
Try to include two referees within your CV to vouch for your skills and experience.
10. Regularly review and update your CV
It's important to regularly revisit your CV and ensure you have included any new skills or experience you have gained.
