The HSE Manager is responsible for the overall design, implementation, communication, and coordination of all health, safety and environmental programs for a business or organisation. HSE Managers are specialists that review and update safety policies and conduct risk assessments to detect potential hazards and plan precautionary measures.
Generally, to enter this profession you will require at least a bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety management or environmental science. You can work in a variety of settings, including offices, offshore rigs, mines, nuclear plants, factories and many more.
To continually maintain an appropriate level of awareness, knowledge, and preparedness across the organization, HSE managers coordinate training programs for employees. An HSE manager working in a construction company, for example, has a duty to educate workers about site-specific safety measures.
Currently, HSE managers are in high demand within the energy industry. The emerging energy sectors within renewables are requiring skill and experienced HSE managers.
Professional development within the HSE industry
Training consists of on-the-job training with additional in-house or external courses which are generally run by health and safety consultants, colleges/universities or specialised training departments. If you require a professional qualification training will likely include a part-time study for NEBOSH, NCRQ or City and Guilds NVQ certificates and diplomas such as the level 3 certificate in Occupational Safety and Health. These qualifications meet the requirement for graduate membership of IOSH (Grad IOSH). Once graduate you will be able to work towards chartered status which involves completing a two-year professional development scheme. As a chartered member, you are then required to undertake continuing professional development.
Membership of IOSH or the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) is very useful for career progression and provides a structured route of CPD, as well as great networking opportunities.
