General duties of a HSE Professional

The general duties of an HSE professional can greatly vary depending on both the employer and chosen sector. Usually an HSE manager will be involved in the following areas: 

  • Evaluating safe operational procedures that account for all potential hazards whilst working
  • Carry out site inspections to ensure policies are procedures are being met
  • Making alterations to working practices to improve safety at work and comply with legislation
  • Prepare H&S strategies and develop an internal policy
  • Lead and manage an in-house training with employees regarding health and safety issues and risks. 
  • Measure and record all findings and produce reports to suggest improvements. 
  • Stay up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the employer's industry;
  • Attend Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) seminars and reading professional journals;

Typical Salaries of a HSE Manager

  • The average salary for health and safety professionals with up three to four experience is approximately £42,000, rising to £38,000 for those with up to nine years' experience.
  • Health and safety professionals who have worked for more than ten years have average salaries of £54,000 with average salaries for those with more than 20 or more years' experience rising to £62,000. These salaries can fluctuate depending on what sector of the energy industry you are working in.
  • Individual salaries for senior managers can rise to in excess of £200,000.
