Senior Energy Engineer

Hawai'i Energy is a ratepayer-funded energy program under contract with the Hawai'i Public Utilities Commission. The Senior Energy Engineer will provide high level technical and management skills focused on creating and executing programs for Hawai'i Energy. Working closely with the Program Delivery Manager, the Senior Energy Engineer will ensure all program implementation and processing is done effectively and efficiently, within budget, and in a timely manner.

Job Responsibilities:

• Serves as the program's technical expert and trusted partner to customers and industry partners and mentors the internal team of energy advisors and engineers.
• Develops relationships with design, supplier and construction communities to identify and address their needs for the program.
• Oversees the technical reach-back support and technical aspects of the program delivery team to meet all program goals.
• Launches new program initiatives by playing a key role in retro-commissioning and Strategic Energy Management.
• Leads the continual improvement of the program's overall technical competence and program design.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 12 - 15 years of prior relevant experience in energy management, mechanical systems design, construction, maintenance and/or related field or, Master's degree with 10 - 13 years of prior relevant experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of building automation systems, water heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and lighting systems.
• Familiarity with energy project development, including new construction, retrofit, and maintenance.
• Proficiency in calculating energy, life-cycle and maintenance project cost savings.
• Familiarity with building energy-use models.
• Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities including expertise in data analysis - e.g. advanced spreadsheet analysis. Experience with data analytics software preferred. Track record of turning data into actionable information.
• Proven track record of developing open, respectful and results-focused working relationships with colleagues, allies, contractors and customers.
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be customer focused to identify and respond to business needs. This includes effectively presenting complex and/or technical information to a wide audience.
• Proven ability to effectively lead employees that are not direct reports, and teach them necessary technical skills for improved program execution.
• Proficiency in managing safety and other types of operational risk.
• Well versed with Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Valid driver's license.

Desirable Qualifications:
• PE, CEM, CEA, LEED, and PMP certification. MBA helpful.
• Energy auditing and field metering experience, including investment grade audits.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex projects (performance/schedule/cost).
• Familiarity with the design, development and implementation of rate-payer funded energy efficiency programs.
• Experience developing and reviewing measurement and verification (M&V) plans and performing M&V activities.
• Experience with electric utility operations, water/wastewater, demand response, smart grid, and energy codes & standards.
• Strong understanding and experience with process improvement, process automation, data management/integration and other systems strategies.
