Xcel Energy is looking for a Senior Energy Trader to join its Commercial Operations Group in Denver, Colorado.

This position will play an integral role in driving proprietary margins through the trading of physical and financial energy products, OTC options & NYMEX products with durations ranging from prompt month to 36 months. Candidate will also be tasked with helping to maintain and grow deal-flow business, assisting Origination team with pricing for structured transactions, and assisting with the execution of weather-related products for hedging strategies related to Xcel's operating companies.
 
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience either in directional fixed-price NYMEX natural gas trading or power term trading.  The Power Term Trader will possess a strong knowledge of PJM and the Northeast ISO's, and will also have experience with pricing, hedging and optimizing around the various load auctions in those regions.
 
Summary
Responsible for energy (electricity, and cross-commodity [gas/coal]) purchases and sales from day ahead to 1 year in advance to maximize Xcel Energy asset-based revenues and reduce system costs. Identifies and analyzes technical market factors and fundamental factors that affect system costs, market prices, basis, and availability of power sources. Profitably trades a combination of ISP markets, OTC forwards, OTC options and NYMEX products to generate trading margins for both Xcel Energy proprietary trading and electric system management. Provides leadership and training to trading staff.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Aggressively manage Xcel Energy's electric system position through the use of both standard and structured trading products. Develop business relationships with other market participants that increase trading profitability. Negotiate trades, which create increased margin, energy cost savings, and hedge risk to Xcel Energy stockholders and customers.
  • Profitably engage in proprietary trading of physical and financial energy products. Must operate within defined risk parameters, with a maximum transaction length of one year. Develop and implement trading strategies that capture inefficiencies of the market as a result of commodity volatility, pricing disparity, congestion and binding constraints.
  • Track, analyze and report on fundamental market conditions that affect forward prices and market opportunities.
  • Perform technical analysis of futures and forward physical market prices to develop a view of the market for forward trading and risk management.
  • Work with Credit Services to administer credit risk management policies and ensure creditworthiness of potential customers and suppliers.
  • Identify opportunities/leads for long-term marketing and Real-Time Traders. Use extensive network of peers in the industry to create profitable transactions.

Required
  • Bachelor's degree with emphasis in Marketing, Business or technical studies
  • 5 years energy trading experience
  • Experience in trading a variety of products, including RTO, OTC forwards, OTC options, ISO and/or CAISO supplemental market and physical markets
  • Demonstrated track record of producing profitable margins as demonstrated on P&L statement
  • Additional requirements are dependent upon the energy market to which the Sr Energy Trader is assigned
