Position Summary

Manage and direct the performance and coordinate plans review for the Intelligent Transportation System electric and fiber optic foot print infrastructure. Examination and review of complex plans for new construction, alteration and repairs for compliance with electrical code and design standards. Assistance is to be provided to architects, engineers, contractors and field inspectors on electrical problems. Work includes interpreting electrical plans, solving unusually difficult code interpretation and design problems, and assisting in the development of electrical construction codes requirements.

  • Manages and directs the Electrical Plans Review Section. Performs electrical and communications plans review for ITS and related deployments.
  • Reviews and examines complex plans and specifications for compliance with electrical codes and sub-subsurface conduit and wire designs.
  • Performs engineering computations to analyze electrical systems.
  • Responds to inquiries from plan reviewers, inspectors, architects, engineers and others regarding electrical code and fiber optic infrastructure questions.
  • Attends conferences meetings with architects, engineers and electrical inspectors relating to code interpretations and electrical design problems.
  • Approves alternate methods or materials for code compliance.
  • Recommends changes in codes to resolve design and interpretation problems and accommodate and control new materials and new design concepts.
  • Makes field inspections at construction sites of large projects at the request of field inspectors.
  • Produces written letters, memos, and code compliance reports.
  • Enters technical data as required for permits or plans information.

  • Certifications required: ICC Electrical Plans Examiner and/or IAEI Electrical Plan Review required
  • 3 years of experience in the highway construction industry relating to electrical work and electrical engineering, and a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Electrical system design experience pertaining to roadside and building construction required
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, construction codes, and related laws and ordinances is required
  • Knowledge of engineering as applied to the design and installation of electrical systems and equipment in major buildings required
  • Knowledge of standard electrical construction materials and design concepts for major structures and new electrical materials and advanced design concepts required
  • Must be able read and accurately interpret roadway and building construction plans and specifications of any complexity required
  • Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies required
  • Must be capable to nake complicated engineering and mathematical calculations and to use engineering devices and reference material
  • Must have the ability to travel to all owned facilities for deployments and investigation
  • Must be able to work on-call and ready-to-work
  • Requires valid driver's license
