Role synopsis
The Controller is accountable for the delivery of all Accounting, Financial Reporting and Control (ARC), including Accounting Policy for the relevant Upstream segment entities, support to business development work stream and Upstream functional activities (i.e. Reservoir Development and Exploration). The Controller reports directly to the Region's Head of Control in Moscow.

The key aim is to ensure that we deliver finance activities that fully comply with all internal and external reporting requirements, create and protect value for BP, and allow us to operate in a simple, integrated and standardized way in order to ensure we produce a single set of trusted financial numbers and analysis.

Key accountabilities
  • Ensure delivery of robust ARC processes to ensure that all accounting policy, control and financial reporting requirements for upstream JVs and Upstream functions are met, both internally and externally, and are delivered in full compliance with local regulatory and statutory requirements, Group Accounting policies and International Accounting Standards.
  • Formulate Accounting Policy advice to BP Russia's Upstream and Business Development activity.
  • Operate sound due diligence and support quarterly close processes ensuring "no surprises", timely reporting and closure of gaps for Upstream entities.
  • Ensure that all internal controls over financial reporting are well designed and operating effectively Ensure that the control environment is in compliance with Group Standards and Practices. Effectively identify and mitigate control risks. Maintain relevant set of control processes - Control Evaluation Templates/ End User Computing/ Balance Sheet Integrity/ Delegation of Authority and control documentation and always seek continuous improvement.
  • Overview the conversion of the Upstream associate/JV financial statements from Russian Accounting Standards into IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), equity accounting and the submission of quarterly group financial results, including the provision of all supplemental financial data.
  • Establish and manage key relationships with finance staff in the JVs to facilitate data exchange, represent ARC in relevant external meetings or committees.
  • Provide input into Upstream JV related external and group audit activities.
  • Provide input to the regional Performance Management department in preparation of the Forecasts/ budgets /long term plan submissions for the Upstream JVs.
  • Support the ARC agenda and the delivery of new standard processes in terms of both design and simplification as it applies to the Upstream business in Russia and more broadly (Segment) if required.
  • Seek to influence business judgment in delivery of business targets and provide advice and counsel on all financial control matters.


Essential Education
Degree in Finance, Economics or Business - Must hold an internationally recognized professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, etc.)

Essential experience and job requirements
  • At least 8 years accounting, reporting and control experience preferably gained in a large oil and gas company and/ or Big 4 Audit firm.
  • Deep technical accounting policy knowledge and understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Sarbanes Oxley related Internal Controls over Financial Reporting, as evidenced by having previously performed the role of a Financial Controller, or by having worked in Big4 Audit firm.
  • Previous experience of working in an Upstream environment.
  • Excellent inter personal skills and ability to establish first class relationships across all aspects and levels of the business.
  • Fluent Russian and English language skills.

  • Strong action bias and ability to engage others in working towards a common goal.
  • Previous experience in leading accounting, reporting and control teams a plus.
  • Advanced Excel user. Experience working with complex Excel workbooks and financial tools.
