Overview:

Primarily manage the mechanical department as an experienced mechanical engineer working under minimal supervision. Apply comprehensive understanding of the routine aspects of mechanical engineering principles, concepts, industry standards and their application to the industries and clients we serve. Occasionally lead mechanical engineering effort for projects/tasks. Provide guidance to less experienced personnel. Provide general oversight of all engineering effort within the department and for some projects be the Mechanical Engineer of Record. Have a familiarity with the programs, staff, and operating procedures of the company and implement those on behalf of the mechanical department; potentially take advantage of various advancement opportunities within the organization if desired.

Primary Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to):

  • Function as the Department Manager by providing direction and oversight for Mechancial Department administrative tasks.
  • Ensure, at a high level, that the total delivery of the mechanical deliverables meet the quality expectations, schedule and are within performance budgets.
  • Manage the department staff level to balance the number of resources with the amount of work. This includes increasing staff, loaning to and/or borrowing from other offices or shifting work between offices.
  • Evaluation of employee performance and make recommendations for salary and grade adjustments.
  • Monitor the quality of the work performed within the department and make design and/or corrective decisions as required.
  • Assign department personnel to project teams and direct the work of those assigned as Lead Engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight to less experienced personnel as necessary including encouraging/assisting with their career advancement. As a mentor, provide technical instruction as required.
  • Assist in project proposals by ascertaining scope, determining the required engineering/design budgets and when necessary, serve as mechanical expert during proposal presentations.
  • Research/resolve technical challenges and other unusual design issues that affect one or more projects.
  • Work with others as required to incorporate code and safety requirements into designs.
  • Maintain effective communications with department members, higher management and sometimes with clients.


  • Minimum of a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 15 years of mechanical engineering (utilities & HVAC ) experience is desired; experience with industrial/chemical/ and cGMP manufacturing projects is preferred but not an absolute requirement
  • PE license is required
  • Experience using or familiarity with l design software required
  • Proficiency with MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
  • Working knowledge of CAD design software (i.e., AutoCAD, Microstation, or both) is not required but familiarity with the capabilities is essential
  • Must have experience in leading the design on a variety of projects of different sizes
  • Have the ability to travel as needed by project requirements; current valid passport preferred
