You will be a part of Corporate Research - Mechanical systems and Mechatronics

Tasks:
Motor and generators are important parts of ABB:s product portfolio. In order to stay competitive on the market it is important to continuously improve the existing products. One way to get more performance out of the machine is to add active radial damping in order to allow higher operating speeds. The active damping is achieved using additional winding in the stator. The extra coil will interfere with the coils used for producing torque and modeling the relation between current and magnetic force is not trivial. The first task of this thesis is to develop finite element models for different winding concepts. In a second step these models should be reduced in a suitable way to be included in dynamic simulation of complete system i.e. Simulink model.

Requirements:
Both commercial and in-house developed code will be used. We are looking for students with background in electrical engineering or applied physics. Prior knowledge in electromagnetics, finite element analysis, and Simulink are desirable but not required.
