Role synopsis
This individual will manage Indirect Tax Team within the Global Tax, Controls and Compliance Tower. The manager will be responsible for ensuring timely and accurate filing of indirect tax returns encompassing a number of BP businesses in multiple jurisdictions with a significant proportion of these based within Europe. This role also supports the Tower Lead with the development and implementation of Tower strategy and plans.

Key accountabilities
  • Develop appropriate processes for Indirect tax as part of end to end reporting process within GBS.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate indirect tax compliance for BP's business across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Management of other key stakeholders who operate processes and controls that are critical to indirect tax compliance processes, in particular Commercial and Financial Operations teams.
  • Understanding complex business scenarios and transaction chains, and break these down to basic principles to determine the correct indirect tax treatment.
  • Reviewing of tax returns and providing feedback/support to the team
  • Providing support for UAT testing for indirect tax systems implementations and changes in the tax rules.
  • Providing support and advice on more complex technical issues and answering queries
  • Ensure timely information gathering and responses are prepared for tax authority audits and enquiries.
  • Identify opportunities, producing work plans and implement simplification and standardisation programmes which deliver process efficiency.
  • Managing and driving the delivery, performance and continuous improvements of the process for greater process efficiencies and costs.
  • Playing an effective role to participate and contribute to GBS Asia LT directly or indirectly (able to provide temporary cover in the absence of Tower Lead, collaborate with cross functions to deliver wider process efficiencies for GBS on activities that are closely linked to direct tax compliant and statutory accounts processes).
  • Working together with GBS and BP L&D teams to develop and deliver targeted training to enhance the breadth and depth of technical capabilities relevant to indirect tax team.
  • Provide inputs and recommendations towards the development of GBS Tax strategy and support the implementation of the strategy in line with BP's overall integrated service model.

Leadership & Supervisory;
  • Plan, assign and direct work for team members.
  • Set goals and clarify expectations, provide regular feedback and conduct appraisals.
  • Coach team members to address process gaps, identify inefficiencies and help to embed a continuous improvement culture in the organisation.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and feedback to team members to support long term career development and retention of key talent.
  • Identify and provide opportunities for learning and self-development to build capability of the team and ensure competency in performing activities. Secure resources to support development efforts.
  • Assign work to team members and manage resource allocation for the team and people in support of GBS service, control and cost requirements. Ensure resource allocation strategy is flexible enough to respond to demand variations
Identify and develop talents within GBS and those outside who will add to the depth of talents in GBS .

Essential Education
  • A university degree or professional qualification, in accountancy or its equivalent. A tax qualification is advantageous.


Essential experience and job requirements
  • Membership with the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia or UK &/or US equivalent is advantageous
  • Minimum of 9 - 10 years of experience in a client-service oriented function.
  • Minimum of 9 - 10 years of coaching and leadership experience managing and supervising teams.
  • Good communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in a simple and commercial way
  • Proven analytical skills and ability to break down complex problems into discrete pieces for analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and influence credibly and affectively at all levels of organization, including executive and C-level.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple activity streams concurrently whilst paying attention to details.

Others
  • Requires advanced knowledge of own technical or professional discipline, specifically indirect tax, within Europe and other geographies.
  • Work on own initiative, often with tight deadlines
  • Good business awareness and knowledge of commercial activities in relevant businesses
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, coupled with the ability to build and maintain strong networks with overseas teams.
