Department Overview

The men and women of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

The Mapping Technician position is responsible for updating and maintaining electronic and hard-copy reports and maps related to the company's electric distribution system. Additional consideration will be given to those applicants who live within a 50 mile radius of the permanent headquarters in Sacramento.

This classification is represented by Engineers & Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining.


- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Must possess a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one by first day of employment
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds, with assistance, a minimum of one time a day
- Significant relevant field or industry experience, or its equivalent in training and education (e.g. relevant 2-year technical degree, relevant technical/trade school certificate, bachelor's degree, or 2 years of experience with mapping, GIS, drafting, estimating or CAD)
- Internal PG&E Employees: Must have qualified on the Physical Test Battery (PTB), Work Orientation Inventory (WOI) and Technical Test Battery (TECH) exams prior to applying
- External and Hiring Hall Candidates: Must qualify on the Physical Test Battery (PTB), Work Orientation Inventory (WOI) and Technical Test Battery (TECH) exams prior to interviewing

Desired ------------------
- Ability to use computer-aided drafting such as AutoCAD and/or geographic information system (GIS) or geospatial environmental mapping system (GEMS)
- Experience with SAP
- Experience with DART


- Electronically access hard-copy documents to review and research work assignments and project jobs.
- Research and prioritize documents for data input.
- Use various computer applications to input data related to specific job-site and facility information and for quality assurance purposes.
- Use electronic and hard-copy documents for tracking historical data and for forecasting.
- Physically mark and highlight data on reports, maps and diagrams as needed.
- Use computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools and databases to create, modify, and update records and maps.
- Ensure records and maps comply with federal, state and local regulations and company requirements.
- Update, remove, and replace maps at various worksite locations.
- Use stepladders to remove, replace, hang, pin and label posted maps at various worksite locations.
- Use printers and plotter to print, review, and identify updates and modifications for records and maps.
- Access various file folders to retrieve job plans, records, maps, diagrams and other documents.
- Use cart or hand-carry folders to and from remote filing locations either on or off a job site.
- Use stepladders and step stools to access and retrieve job plans, records, maps, diagrams and other documents.
- Receive, carry and move files from one filing cabinet to another at a job site.
- Load and unload folders into and out of cardboard boxes and filing cabinets for long-term storage.
- Use a computer to create folders and file electronic documents on shared services drives.
- Communicate in person, by phone, and by email with supervisor, internal company employees, external contractors, engineering firms, public agencies and the public regarding job-related information.
