The Lead Manufacturing Engineer NC Programming & Machining will have primary responsibility to develop and implement new and improved methods of NC Programming and Machining in the GE Steam Turbine and Large Generator facility located in Schenectady, NY.

Essential Responsibilities

The Lead Manufacturing Engineer NC Programming & Machining will work with the shop to optimize the shop efficiencies for NC Machine tools and how they are utilized including developing new and improved processes, procedures and installing new equipment to enable the facility to make the required output at the budgeted handbook hours. A major portion of this role is helping the shop develop more cost effective strategies to lower handbook cost. This will be achieved through process improvement, training and subsystem redesign. Position includes providing manufacturing technical support for solving difficult issues in production cells as well as the establishment of new workstation procedures and training.

In addition, you will:
  • Act as advance manufacturing engineering expert for Large Machine and Rotors Manufacturing Operations in GE Schenectady NY
  • Become familiar with existing equipment, processes, designs, documentation, and procedures
  • Develop a model of total part manufacture, breaking it down into basic elements including machine capability, uptime, tooling, NC programming, operator effectiveness, Actual machine time, part handling, inspection and queue time
  • Determine a "should take" perspective
  • Analyze and improve Identify and execute projects to work with the shop and CNC team to optimize processing and get lowest possible hours and cycle
  • Work in a cross functional team environment to implement a high impact deck of projects to reduce overall part machining cycles and handbook hours by 30%
  • Work with materials engineering, design engineering and the shop to develop improved more producible designs
  • Work with the NC Machine TL to develop and execute a plan to drive step change advancements in part manufacture
  • Develop Cad based CAM where economically viable for parts which will be difficult to manufacture with APT
  • Understand Ex-Alstom facility machining capability and processes
  • Document and leverage best practices back to Schenectady plant processes
  • Assess best industry practices in machining, programming and tooling design and leverage back to Schenectady plant processes
  • Provide competitive assessments of alternative designs and work with engineering to develop product with best in class producible designs.
  • Participate in concurrent engineering and design of new generator products supporting all NPI tollgates
  • Initiate and project manage capital equipment projects that support new product designs, factory capacity additions, and quality improvement goals
  • Typical project scope involves the development of specifications, supplier management, purchase, installation and qualification of the manufacturing equipment
  • Establish, document, and maintain design for manufacturing (DFM) guidelines for engineering use compatible with current manufacturing capability
  • Evaluate new products for manufacturability per established DFM guidelines
  • Advanced manufacturing support of NPI and NTI designs for new products and processes
  • Provide documentation and training to shop floor to ensure seamless new product execution
  • Work with shop to develop manufacturing methods, schedules, and documentation for improvements
  • Help the shop Implement operator training plans
  • Apply lean methods to equipment and material handling designs to reduce waste throughout the production process
  • Design, procure and implement tooling and fixturing to support rapid setup changes
  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and processes


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in manufacturing operations or manufacturing engineering positions
