The Performance and Operability Team is responsible for developing and adapting wind turbine control strategies to optimize Cost of Energy by reducing cost drivers of turbine component while maximizing turbine energy export.
The scope of this position includes design, implementation, and validation of dynamic and operational control systems that meet product needs.
This will require strong collaboration with other areas, to ensure accurate and optimal loads and performance predictions

Essential Responsibilities

• Participate in the development and enhancement of control algorithms that increase turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine, and at the same time allow the turbine to run with high availability. Covering functional requirements definition, flow down, preliminary design development & documentation
• Implement and validate control algorithms in both the loads simulation environment as well as on the turbine programmable logic controller according to the product requirements
• Interface with Simulations and Controls Team and incorporate wind turbine and wind farm operability requirements into the design, as part of control system design
• Cooperate with the Loads and Validation teams to analyze the impact of the controls strategy on the mechanical loads of the turbine in simulation and through the evaluation of measurement data
• Work with controls product line & systems personnel to flow down desired capability into requirements & preliminary design that can be executed through detailed design & implementation.
• Work with Fleet Reliability Operations and Renewable Services team to define control system needs for the installed base
• Engage with turbine systems and services team to investigate and analyze complex controls and turbine dynamics issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions
• Engage in the efforts of defining / documenting turbine operability & constraints
• Validation of turbine controls based on Turbine experimental tests results. Significant involvement in turbine commissioning on site.
• Support performance issues resolution from wind Farms operation, including Root Cause analysis using problem solving methodology
• Support diagnosing performance data, as needed from prototypes and customer turbines.


• Master's degree in Engineering Control Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or aerospace Engineering from an accredited College or University
• Experience in design and / or modeling of controls systems
• Experience with new controls algorithm development, implementation and validation techniques: Software in the Loop (SIL), Processor in the Loop (PIL), Hardware in the Loop (HIL)
• Proficient in Matlab / Simulink for the design, simulation and validation of controls systems
• Experience with wind turbine simulation tools and environment such as Bladed, FLEX5, HAWC2
• Knowledge on Aero, System dynamics, Controls and Mechanical loading simulations
• Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc) and basic knowledge in modern (state-space, optimal control, etc) control theory
• Strong oral and written communication skills in English language
• Willingness to travel
