Department Overview

Market, Initiative, Design, Analysis, and Strategy (MIDAS) is part of PG&E's Energy Policy and Procurement (EPP) organization which is responsible for the procurement of both electric power and natural gas for PG&E customers. To support the procurement of reliable and affordable electric power in an environmentally sustainable manner, the MIDAS team monitors the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) markets, actively participates in design efforts, manages implementation of market initiatives, and supports other strategic efforts across the EPP organization.

Position Summary

The EPP organization is an active participant in regulatory forums to shape electric markets. The Sr. Business Project Manager will provide support to the Market Initiative group in MIDAS and will primarily focus on: (1) providing centralized Project Management Office functions to achieve smooth and orderly implementation of CAISO initiatives, and (2) partnering with other lines of business to manage project scope, schedule and risks.


Minimum Qualifications:
•Bachelor's Degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or related discipline
•PMP certification
•6 years of relevant experience

Desired Qualifications:
•MBA or other graduate programs desirable
•Advanced knowledge of energy market design or utility experience, especially related to California markets and regulators (CAISO and CPUC)
•Excellent oral communication and writing skills with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to various audiences (technical colleagues, senior management)
•Analytical/problem resolution skills
•Attention to details and understanding of key drivers affecting business results, sometimes with limited information/data
•Ability to manage team and personal dynamics to drive projects forward
•Ability to lead complex project meetings
•Self-directed, team player, focused on delivering high quality results consistently and on a timely basis
•Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives
•Ability to provide new perspectives/approaches on existing tasks/solutions
•Proficient in Microsoft Office, Project, Visio or similar software


Market Initiative Implementation:
•Utilize project management tools and methodologies, leads the development and implementation of moderate to complex to major projects, from inception to closeout, that translate CAISO's business requirement changes to Information Technology (IT) system and business process changes in understandable terms, including impacts from interdependencies between departments.
•Establish project team with agreed upon roles and responsibilities. Follow the initiatives in the policy phase to understand the fundamentals and potential changes from the existing CAISO market design and communicate those with impacted stakeholders.
•Develop a comprehensive end-to-end project plan with inputs from IT Project Manager that identifies elements required for market simulation readiness, key risks and potential mitigation strategies, readiness criteria that support Go/No-Go, and sufficient check points and contingencies to put project plan back on track.
•Drive consensus from stakeholders across functions throughout each phase of the project plan. Engage all stakeholders to assess project risk, mitigation strategies, and contingency measures to consistently maintain project on track. Incorporate lessons learned and best practices as necessary. Provide regular updates to project sponsors and Sr. management and obtain approval as needed.
•Support Manager in PG&E's participation in CAISO release planning and foster good working relationship with external stakeholders to advocate implementation readiness, such as developing presentations, participating in stakeholder calls, and drafting talking points for Sr. Management team. Able to put tasks into actions in a self-directed manner, sometimes with limited information or data.
