Review prototype tooling costs submitted by Tier 1 suppliers. Assist Purchasing to negotiate cost reductions.

Evaluate cost reduction opportunities including direction sourcing tools to local prototype tool shops, utilizing rapid prototypes, identifying production pull-ahead opportunities, and cost-optimizing suppliers' prototype tooling designs.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Review prototype costs for all vehicle commodities except engine and transmission.
  • Develop ground-up prototype tool cost estimates using personal knowledge/experience.
  • Assist Purchasing to negotiate reduced prototype tooling costs.
  • Identify production pull-ahead opportunities and negotiate implementation with suppliers.
  • Identify rapid prototyping opportunities.
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of best-in-class tooling processes.
  • Work with Design and Release Engineers, Tier 1 suppliers, and tool shops to develop prototype tooling strategies that ensure production intent quality while minimizing cost and timing.
  • Track all negotiations (cost and timing) utilizing internal relational database.
  • Negotiate cost and timing of late tool changes approved by engineering.

BS degree from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of one (1) year of engineering experience, or MS degree from an accredited engineering school

Desired Experience & Skills:
  • Certified Journeyman in Tool & Die Trades
  • 10+ years tool and die maker experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a tool shop program manager or shop floor manager
  • Expert knowledge of prototype tooling processes including injection molding, die casting, stamping and blow molding
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Experienced with reviewing 3-D CAD data and part specifications and able to rapidly develop prototype tool cost estimates with no other input data
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be team oriented & willing to share knowledge with others
  • Must be able to work at a rapid pace and simultaneously negotiate dozens of separate commodities with short approval time limits typically measured in days
  • Solid computer skills including Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook

Critical for employee to be there on time on a regular basis.
Work hours are normally 8 hours per day and 5 days per week, Monday-Friday. Regular attendance of scheduled hours is extremely important, but not critical, except for deadlines and meetings. Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary to meet deadlines. Must exhibit flexibility of work hours to adjust to surge situations based on critical mission requirements.

Other Essential Functions
Must demonstrate professional behavior at all times when dealing with customers, management and co-workers. Must have clear, concise and accurate communications skills in English, both verbal and written. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk to employees or others. Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner. Independent personal transportation to office or work site is required. Travel to and from customer's locations and the test fields may be required to support projects. This may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can possibly be made for POV, if necessary. When operating any vehicle for work purposes, must wear seat belt and in addition, no cellular devices are to be used when vehicle is in motion. Must pass a background check, drug screen, and Health Performance Exam.
