The Renewable Energy Development Program - Data Scientist Track is designed to allow members to experience cross functional opportunities within the Renewables business. The program will consist of four, six month rotations, where the program member will work on different data analytical projects with broad impact to the business.

Essential Responsibilities

As the program member of the Renewable Energy Development Program - Data Scientist Track, you will be responsible for designing, developing and testing software to create industrial internet products and services tailored to the needs of the GE businesses and external customers. You will be required to have an understanding of statistical analysis, machine learning techniques, mathematical modeling and optimization, and be able to apply these techniques to large, complex data sets.
You will be part of a cross-disciplinary development team of statisticians, computer scientists, software developers, domain experts, product managers, and end users, working in concert with customers and partners in the GE business units. Potential application areas include remote monitoring and diagnostics across infrastructure and industrial sectors, and operations optimization. You will contribute to projects and processes in a variety of functions across the Renewables Business, including Sales, Commercial Operations, Product Line Leadership, Project Management Logistics, Sourcing, Field Services, Parts and Operations, and others.
In this program, you will:
  • Find and interpret data sources, manage large amounts of data, merge data sources together, ensure consistency of data-sets, create visualizations to aid in understanding data, build mathematical models using the data, and communicate insights / findings in simplified way to reach people who do not understand complex statistics
  • Execute analyses using modern analytical methods and technologies and/or contribute to technological developments in a team environment, working together with customers and partners in the business unit
  • Work with fellow business leaders and team members on business critical issues with broad impact during each of the four rotations
  • Take an off program role within Renewables that continues to grow your expertise as a data scientist and leader upon completion of the Program
  • Develop analytics to address customer needs and opportunities
  • Work alongside software developers and software engineers to translate algorithms into commercially viable products and services
  • Work in technical teams in development, deployment, and application of applied analytics, predictive analytics, and prescriptive analytics
  • Perform exploratory and targeted data analyses using descriptive statistics and other methods
  • Work with data engineers on data quality assessment, data cleaning and data analytics
  • Generate reports, annotated code, and other projects artifacts to document, archive, and communicate your work and outcomes
  • Share and discuss findings with team members


  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • GPA equal or greater than 3.0
  • Ability and willingness to relocate to Schenectady, NY

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications

    Desired Characteristics

  • Master's Degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
  • Minimum of 1 year of analytics development for industrial applications in a commercial setting
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of one or more database platforms (e.g. SAS, PostgreSQL, Greenplum, Hadoop)
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of one or more programming languages (e.g. SPSS, SQL, Matlab Python, R, C#)
  • Demonstrated skill at data cleaning, data quality assessment, and using analytics for data assessment
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of applied analytics, descriptive statistics, machine learning, mathematical optimization, feature extraction and predictive analytics on industrial datasets
  • Demonstrated skill at data visualization and storytelling for an audience of stakeholders (e.g. JMP, Tableau, Matlab)
  • Demonstrated understanding of database architecture and necessary database management methods
  • Demonstrated awareness of real-time analytics development and deployment
  • Demonstrated awareness of industry and technology trends
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated awareness of critical thinking and problem solving methods
