The Lead Design Engineer-Services Structures Engineering is tasked with finding innovative ways to add value to the existing fleet. You will focus on the major structural components in a wind turbine including the rotor hub, machine head bedplate, generator frame, main bearing pillow block housing, walkways, ladders, and accessories.

Essential Responsibilities

In this role the Lead Design Engineer-Services Structures Engineering supports the project through its entire life cycle from conceptual to final design, testing (if necessary), qualification, manufacturing, installation, and fleet support.

As the Lead Design Engineer-Services Structures Engineering, you will:
• Design and development of modifications to fabricated and/or cast structural components
• Conduct analysis using finite element methods (static, fatigue, modal) to assess impact of modifications to or use of supporting structures to achieve project goals, often leveraging existing engineering models and practices
• Analyze bolted joints where applicable
• Develop Services productivity programs that optimize structural component maintenance and/or inspection
• Revise design and analysis documentation, e.g. drawings, specifications, design practices, bills of material (BoM), Work Desk Instructions (WDI), and other Services documentation
• Work hands on with GE service shops to develop optimized procedures and part fit ups
• Work cross functionally with various teams including quality, manufacturing, sourcing, suppliers, field support, and especially the Structures Center of Excellence
• Develop field or lab test plans and evaluating data to prove design concept, function, and reliability
• Support site failure analysis and correction, supplier qualification / deviation disposition and GE manufacturing on all technical issues related Services offerings
• Provide in-person site support when required
• Execute assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
• Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
• Participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issues
• Participate as a reviewer in technical, program, and/or customer reviews


• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited college of university
• Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience or related discipline

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Desired Characteristics

• Master's Degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering
• Cast or welded fabrication structural design experience
• Experience with 3D-CAD tools (NX / Unigraphics)
• Experience with ANSYS or other finite element analysis tools
• Welding or Sand casting manufacturing, material and NDT knowledge
• Bolted joint design experience
• Technical drawing, GD&T and design interpretation background
• Experience or interest in computer programming
• Proven project, program leadership experience
• Ability to work under pressure and challenging conditions
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
• Ability to work with global team members across cultural boundaries
• Wind turbine experience
