The Lead Design Engineer, Wind Gearbox & Drives will lead and execute engineering work to support the growing Onshore Wind business in the Gearbox Global Center of Excellence. The responsibility includes working with our customers on fleet issue resolution, with our suppliers in improving our production gearboxes quality, cost, & reliability and in support of product development.

Essential Responsibilities

This role involves developing solutions, products and specifications within the global Wind, Gearbox / Drives COE for improved drive-train engineering as well as design liaison with gearbox supplier engineering & manufacturing. In this role, the Design Engineer will work cross functionally with services, product management and the sourcing and sourcing quality teams. The Design Engineer will work with fleet issues as well as with suppliers.

As The Lead Design Engineer, Wind Gearbox & Drives, you will:

• Manage design, qualification and test of indirect or direct manufactured gearboxes and their integration into the overall wind turbine drive-train
• Manage internal lab, field and test engineering data collection and transforming the lessons learned into short term improvements to the fleet and then continuous improvements through spec's and drawings
• Coordinate tasks cross-functionally with quality teams, manufacturing engineers, sourcing, planning, field support and others to improve first time yield
• Conduct design reviews with Control Title Holders of design analysis and drawings and get their approval
• Ensure project schedules & budgets (where appropriate) are met
• Implementation of corrective actions in field issues on gearboxes
• Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures


• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar from an accredited college or university
• Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Desired Characteristics

• Two+ years gear design and manufacturing knowledge including detail design tools, CAD (NX) and test experience
• Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude (root cause analysis experience)
• Low speed gear application and bearing design experience
• Kisssoft or MASTA design tool experience
• FEA experience (Ansys Workbench) and 3D modeling experience
• Willingness and ability to travel for 10% of time
• Strong verbal and written communication skills aligned to technical role leading cross functional efforts
