The Engineering & Science Services and Skills Augmentation (ESSSA) contract provides engineering, scientific and engineering technician support to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL. Design, Develop, and Test real time embedded software for the International Space Station (ISS) facilities and payload systems. This task will require significant interaction with System's Engineering disciplines to develop and validate requirements; select software designs and target platforms; evaluation of ongoing trade studies and work instruction packages; the support of internal and project level reviews, working groups, vendor technical interchange meetings, peer reviews, code walkthroughs, and other project meetings associated with the software delivery life cycle. All software designs will follow the guidelines of NASA Software Engineering Procedural Requirements (NPR 7150.2), as well as CMMI Level III processes.

Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years of experience, a Masters with at least 6 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience. Degree in aerospace, software, electrical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required as well as a minimum of 6 years of experience with the full life cycle of software processes and disciplines for real time and embedded software design, development, and delivery.

The selected candidate will have experience designing Object Oriented software in C/C++ for Real-Time operating systems/architectures in diverse development environments such as Eclipse or Visual Studios, as well as experience with Open Source software development tools executing in a Windows environment targeting both Windows platforms as well as real time embedded platforms. The selected candidate will possess skills necessary to translate prototype or existing Instrumentation software (e.g LabView) to an operational ISS real time embedded system/software environment. The candidate will be very skilled with the constraints of real time software design, specifically with synchronous/asynchronous interfaces, aperiodic processes (threading, semaphores, data integrity, shared memory, etc.), interrupt handling, and management of multi - processor type software targets where memory and time are well managed. Previous experience writing device drivers or interface software for interfaces such as 1553B, RS-422, RS 485, PCI, SDLC, GPS serial, and Ethernet are highly desired. Previous experiences with software testing and scripting in a lab environment using emulators, logic analyzers, Python or other test scripting languages and PC based data generation/capture devices is also desirable. Good communication and design documentation skills are essential. Any previous work with NASA software design procedures and presentations are also desirable.

Qualifications Include:

  • C/C++ Software development in a common development environment such as Eclipse or Visual Studios.
  • An understanding of object oriented paradigms used in design of OO software.
  • Experience with Real Time Systems and interface to time based data interfaces such as RS422 and 1553.
  • Solid familiarity with the configuration of Windows tools and environments.
  • Experience with managing software within a standard Configuration Management system, preferably Git or SVN.
  • Experience with building, testing, and delivering software within a standard process methodology such as CMMI.

Candidate is required to be a self-motivated, team player familiar with working in a dynamic and hands on work environment as well as be willing to provide critical program, scheduling, and design decisions.

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
