Jacobs has an enviable reputation in the Highways UK consultancy sector as a result of a portfolio of high profile projects with clients that include the Highways Agency, National Contractors and Local Authorities. Our current portfolio of projects includes the M1 Junction 19 Upgrading, A160/A180 Improvement at Immingham, M6 J16-19 Managed Motorway and M6 to Heysham Link. And our plans to add to this portfolio continue apace. So would you like to be a member of our infrastructure centre of excellence based in London?

We are wishing to appoint a Technical Director to join our established highways design team. You will become a member of a large and expanding team and your role will be to lead in the delivery of excellent design services throughout all stages of major project development and in all areas of highways design.


As a Technical Director you will be leading a variety of project types, sizes and complexities. Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparation of highway designs at feasibility, optioneering, planning and detailed design stages
  • Providing technical direction to other design engineers and/or technicians
  • Liaison with clients, contractors and third parties
  • Interfacing with other Jacobs engineering disciplines such as geotechnical, highways, railways, coastal & marine, and environmental engineers
  • You will be responsible for resolving technical issues as they occur and for the monitoring of progress of your areas of responsibility
  • Financial management and monitoring
  • Client Relationship Management at all levels in client organisations

Essential Criteria
  • A degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Chartered Member of ICE or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in the highways sector
  • Experience of liaising/negotiating with client representatives and staff at a senior level
  • Thorough understanding of the DMRB
  • Good working knowledge of different contract types and procurement options.
  • Able to produce well-presented and technically accurate reports
  • Capable of managing a challenging workload subject to change at short notice
  • Capability to manage tasks and costs and deliver programmed work on time and under budget including adoption of EVA techniques
  • Good IT skills
  • Experience of motivating and driving delivery teams
  • Confident and with proven interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of ECI or Design and Build projects
  • Experience of construction supervision
  • Knowledge of HA PCF
  • Knowledge of local authority interfaces
  • PRINCE2 Accreditation
  • Health and Safety training in the infrastructure sector
