Position Summary

Essential role will include working closely with Communications Practice Director and other members of the management consulting team to create clear and concise information materials to inform stakeholders in communities impacted by water resource, wastewater, and infrastructure efforts. Emphasis will be on direct interaction with clients to gain an understanding of the unique issues and concerns of the impacted community in order to develop a communications approach tailored to those concerns; requires ability to identify tactics and strategies to reach targeted audiences in a cost-effective way with messages that resonate and potentially impact behavior. Essential to the role is an aptitude for and comfort with learning about technical issues primarily as they relate to water resource management, natural gas, or infrastructure, as well as a demonstrated ability to prioritize, take initiative, and work both independently and as part of a team. Duties include developing public-friendly content around technical issues; producing and distributing outreach materials; directing project team members such as graphic designers or other service providers needed to ensure efficient project delivery; coordinating across other service areas internally to assist where possible with projects requiring a communications component; engaging with elected and public officials; and performing tasks within defined budgets and hours. Duties may also include assisting with facilitation of citizen groups; engaging with the media; performing business development functions at conferences and other client interface opportunities; assisting in responding to RFPs for communication related projects including writing and editing proposal content; and presenting at technical conferences. Duties will be performed both in the office and at client sites. Some travel will be required, and could involve temporary assignments.

The ideal candidate will have experience in developing communications related to natural gas infrastructure, stormwater, CSO's, SSOs, water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, watershed management, water supply, water and/or wastewater rate structures, pipeline and/or facility construction, or other directly related experience.

• Bachelors or Master's degree in Journalism or Communications is required
• 5 or more years relevant experience in the communications field, such as public relations and journalism is required
• Strong writing and verbal communication skills is required
• Experience working with public agencies is required
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize, take initiative, and work independently
• Computer proficiency and ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Experience in managing communication issues related to the water, wastewater, natural gas, or infrastructure industry preferred
• Knowledge of developing strategic communication plans around engineering or technical projects, and offering consulting services to clients preferred
• Direct experience with the news media (i.e. serving as spokesperson, pitching stories, providing interview coaching, etc.) preferred
• Ability to facilitate discussion with a variety of stakeholders and work toward consensus preferred
• Understanding of political and social challenges that may impact effective communication preferred
• Experience in conducting training sessions for diverse audiences preferred
• Knowledge of social media channels and their use for public outreach efforts preferred
• Proficiency with graphic design software preferred
• Experience in script writing and/or video production preferred
