We currently have an opportunity within our Highways Centre of Excellence team in Winnersh (Reading) for a Senior Bridge Engineer to make your mark and influence the continuing growth of Jacobs. Winnersh is home to the largest bridge team in Jacobs UK and they have a holistic approach to bridge engineering within an integrated team of structural design specialists and asset-management engineers.

The Senior Bridge Engineer will be involved in an exciting mix of iconic bridge design and bridge rehabilitation schemes across a dozen key clients, with workload reaching ahead 5 years on framework contracts. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your personal skills in engineering, project management and team leadership, as well as managing your own portfolio of projects.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Organising, managing and carrying out, Principal & Special Inspections
  • Preparation and checking of inspection and assessment reports
  • Preparation and checking of bridge capacity assessment calculations
  • Management and preparation of bridge strengthening, new-build or modification designs at feasibility, optioneering and detailed design stages
  • Preparation of contract documents and fee & works estimates for schemes
  • Technical and managerial supervision of other staff in the bridge team
  • Liaison with stakeholders and contractors, including our clients Term Maintenance contractors
  • Programming schemes and works, and budget management of our fees and contractors works costs for our client bridge managers
  • Interfacing with other Jacobs engineering disciplines; geotechnical, highways and environmental

Essential Criteria

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • CEng and MICE status or equivalent
  • Knowledge of CDM Regulations
  • Experience in the Bridges / Highways sector
  • Experience of design analysis and assessment of structures - Archie, MEXE, SuperSTRESS etc.
  • Experience of liaising and negotiating with client representatives and colleagues
  • Ability to produce well-presented and accurate reports
  • Capable of managing a challenging workload subject to change at short notice
  • Can manage own and sub-team tasks and costs; and deliver programmed works
  • Confident with proven interpersonal and communication skills

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of Local Authority Bridge management
  • Experience of construction supervision
  • Good working knowledge of different contract types and procurement options
  • Health and Safety training in the Bridges Sector
  • Ability to use AutoCAD
  • Thorough knowledge of current codes and standards, including BS5400, Eurocodes and DMRB
  • Thorough understanding of SHW
