The General Maintenance Technician performs duties including various manual, un-skilled, and/or skilled tasks as required for mechanical piping, structural installation, pipe lifting, scaffold erection, sheet metal fabrication, pipe line insulation, rigging, in accordance with all BP and CH2M safety, environmental and operational practices, policies and procedures.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Perform piping spool/valve installation and removal, rigging, blinding and minor pipe fitting
  • Perform manual labor including operating small hand tools and power tools. (buffer/grinders, saw-zalls, drills, shovels, etc.), and carrying and lifting materials (cribbing, shoveling snow, and other activities)
  • Perform heavy labor
  • Assist building scaffold with qualified scaffold builder
  • Performs manual labor supporting scaffolding activity, such as cleanup, hauling, stacking materials, shoveling, stacking pipe skids, moving supports, handling steel material and valves.
  • Demonstrate and promote safe work practices and adhere to company and client safety policies and procedures for work performed, including proper hazard recognition and mitigation of task and accept accountability for safe work practices.
  • Demonstrate support for the company's environmental management system.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team and follow work direction
  • Participate in JSA, pre-job walk-down and safety PTSP card preparation of work and material needed.
  • Routinely perform safety and productivity observations; shop, field, and vehicle inspections
  • Ability to operate vehicles (Pickups, 12 foot flatbed trucks - F-550, 12 foot box van trucks - F-550) and equipment (i.e. Man lifts) in all season adverse weather or road conditions
  • Able to work in confined spaces and wear respirators.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • General knowledge of structural and mechanical piping maintenance operations
  • General knowledge of rigging and bolt-up procedures.
  • Ability to help with piping spool installation and removal.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be capable of performing assigned tasks. with limited general technical guidance.
  • General mathematical knowledge.
  • Depending on assignment, may be required to prepare and process various types of documentation including permits and SETA card completion to identify task hazards.
  • Must be self motivated and work well with others.
  • Ability to follow all policies and procedures and work in a safe and productive manner
  • Capable of learning various CH2MHILL, and BP safety and operational procedures and demonstrating required competencies
  • Able to effectively communicate with fellow workers and alternate.
Physical Demand/Work Environment:
 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Must have ability to stand, walk on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, sit, squat, kneel, reach through low and high ranges and exhibit normal balance and coordination. These basic physical requirements are essential for safe performance of the job in harsh environments with exposure to very cold temperatures and while wearing arctic gear.
  • Lift 50 lbs from floor to waist level x 2 with a 12 second interval. Lift 43 lbs from floor to shoulder level x 2 with a 12 second interval.
  • Lift 28 lbs from floor to crown/overhead level x 2 with a 12 second interval.
  • Carry 50 lbs with two hands for a minimum distance of 30 feet x 2 allow a 60 second rest period between repetitions.
  • Stairs: Walk up and down 20 steps x 5 repetitions for a total of 100 steps. Self-paced allow a 60 second rest break after walking up and down 50 steps.
  • Climb Stairs and Carry: While carrying 30 lbs in one hand and holding onto a railing with the other hand for safety, walk up and down 20 steps x 3 for a total of 60 steps. Self-paced but continuous, allow a 60 second rest break after walking up and down each set of 20 steps.
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb up and down 30 rungs x 2 repetitions for a total of 60 rungs. Self-paced allow a 60 second rest period after a set of 30 rungs.
  • Repetitive Stoop Test: Perform from standing position, bend forward at waist as far as possible without bending the knees with hands reaching toward the floor x 10, self-paced, but continuous.
  • Repetitive Kneel Test: Perform from standing, kneel on one knee, alternate from left to right knee, x 10 each knee.
  • Repetitive Squat Test: Perform a functional squat and stand x 10.
  • Twist and Flex Test: Perform from standing alternate toe touches x 10 to each side to assess ability to twist and flex the trunk repetitively.
 

The minimum qualifications for this position are:
  • 1 year experience working in one of the following industries: construction, maintenance, industrial, farming, fishing or one (1) year of vocational trade school experience required
  • Valid driver's license including ability to be insured by CH2M's auto insurer required 
  • High school/GED required


The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
One (1) year experience erecting structural iron preferred
Petrochemical, oilfield or arctic experience preferred
Sheet metal, insulating, scaffold experience is preferred
Industry Facility Experience preferred
Rigging or bolt up experience preferred

Candidates must successfully complete all required pre-employment requirements including physical, drug screen and background check

This position is located on the North Slope and requires a rotational work schedule.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
